Has anyone in GA bought a car out of state?

I am looking to buy an e30, and I found a good one in NC. The only problem is I have no idea what the proper procedure is for getting it home. I looked on the GA DMW website but it is pretty much impossible to find information on there.

Can anyone help me out with what to do with licence plates, insurance, etc?

Have a notary with you when you sign the title over in North Carolina, thats what I had to do when I bought my Jeep from NC. That should be the only real requirement to be able to transfer the title, once they see that notary stamp it should be pretty smooth sailing for the transfer.

All this is too much work...

Buy car. Sign title. Sign bill of sale. Drive car home with VALID insurance. I have bought a lot of cars out of state. Never had a problem. Drive home with no tag or the tag from the previous own. Been pulled over before and explain how the GA system works.

You have 30 days to drive on the title, bill of sale and insurance.

Yep, when I bought my E39 I drove home with the PO's tag on the car and mailed it to him.

Not anymore, bro. You got 7 days to drive without registering, not 30.

The rest of this is true however.

It's only 30 days when purchased at a dealership.

OK. So same deal. Go get car. Drive it home. Register it. I knew they were changing it but didn't know it actually happened.

The notary part is a NC specific thing and must be done. I just bought one in NC last month and used a mobile notary service to come to us in the parking lot and notarize it.
