    Houston: can you help please?

    Greetings, everyone from Houston,

My name is Jimmy and I am new to the forum. Not knowing much about the E30s at all other than liking its classic looks, I'd like to get a side project car going as my hobby. The reason why I'm here is because I need some help on purchasing an E30, I need someone with experience to check out the car with me.

Also, since it is the first time I'm making a private purchase, could anyone tell me what is involved in the transaction? What is all needed here?

Your help and comment is very much appreciated here, I am looking forward to join the E30 team.

I'd be more than happy to help. Out of curiosity, what price range are you looking in?

As far as buying private party, you'll want to do the following:

This is directly from the Texas DMV: https://txdmv.gov/motorists/buying-or-selling-a-vehicle

    • Have the seller hand you a signed, dated title with his name printed on it as well as the purchase price. He should also write down the current odometer reading for you.
    • Complete a Application for Texas Title (Form 130-U), making sure it also has the seller’s name printed on it, his signature, the date and what you paid for the car.
    • Also have the seller give you the vehicle registration receipt and any other paperwork associated with the vehicle such as a release of lien or power of attorney.
    • Keep a written record of the seller’s name and address, the date of sale and any related vehicle information such as the vehicle identification number.
    • Be prepared to pay the standard presumptive value if you purchased the vehicle from a private party (otherwise you’ll pay the motor vehicle sales tax which is 6.25% of the purchase price). You must also pay the title transfer, registration and local fees. To find out the exact total, consult the county tax office.
    • Have on hand your proof of liability insurance to present at the county tax office. Without this, the state will not process your application.
    • Find the nearest county tax office and take with you the above paperwork and fees. Have the seller go with you to avoid any surprises such as legal or salvage issues. Most likely the owner will remove the license plates from the vehicle, so you’ll need to obtain a vehicle transfer permit before you drive the car on Texas roads.
The only thing I would add is that you draw up a bill of sale yourself. Print two copies (one for you, one for the seller), sign it and have the seller sign it. Also, if you can, get a copy of the seller's driver's license. This isn't necessary, it's just for records.

      Thank you very much, Neil!

I am looking at around 2000 range. Note that I am OK with blemishes on the exterior and it's the mechanical part I'm unsure of.

The information you provided is very helpful, I have to thank you one more time on it.

One quick question though, I doubt the seller will have this:

Also have the seller give you the vehicle registration receipt and any other paperwork associated with the vehicle such as a release of lien or power of attorney.

Would it be OK to purchase the car without?

      Thanks again,

      Jimmy

The main thing you are going to be looking for at that price range is rust.

And yeah, it's alright if they don't have that. As long as you get the signed title you're ok.

You can find them for that price, but probably for far more than blemishes, but doable according to the level of project you are willing to get into.

normally, rust here in houston shouldn't be too big a deal. mechanical issues are generally easy to fix on these cars because we have great junk yards. you will just need a bently manual and the desire to get your hands dirty. i would much sooner buy a car with driveline problems before i purchased a car that needs a paint job. to make an ugly car look good you will be spending at least 2k on a marginal paint job.

                ^ this.

bought a non-running car this way, all it needed was a transmission and engine reseal. main thing was the paint was immaculate and body near perfect. for less than 2k.
