Do you have a job there? From logistical point, its far from everything. You will have to drive to the major airports, Manhattan is far, to go anywhere outside of the island, you will have to drive all the way to the city. -
Not a job put possible open a business with some family member; therefore the interest for this area. just want to know the overall feel of the area
Google maps says 1 hr 44 minutes to Manhattan - that is less than my Sacramento to SF tripComment

North Hampton as in the North Hampton right by Riverhead NY? I drive through it everyday on my way to work. Not a lot to it but you are close to the beach and its nice to be out this way in the summer and fall.Comment

The winters vary. Last year we got slammed with lots of snow, but the year before was very mild. Anywhere in the Hamptons is a great place to be in the summer.
Like previously stated you are going to be far from everything.
Housing is expensive compared to most places in the US, but your from Cali, so you are probably used to that.

Particularly is my wife and step son are looking on starting a business (is there any insight of what businesses are need it in the area? might be another opportunity)
I have the possibility to relocate to NY city but I understand that the utmost farther part I can be in order to make it into Manhattan (via train) is brentwood or smithtown (ill be working from the Manhattan office 3 days a week only). Will this be correct?Comment

I live in Suffolk county and commute to Manhattan everyday. It honestly sucks. Which is why I am looking to relocate to Queens.
I take the Ronkonkoma line. Which is the main line on the LIRR. I would avoid the north shore line like the plague (Smithtown is on that line). The first portion is diesel trains that are much slower than the electric trains.
It is 2 and a half hours from when I walk out my door to when I sit down at my desk. To top it off there are system wide delays at least once a week. Whether it be switching problems, or someone being hit at a crossing. Something is always going wrong. If it even so much as drizzles your gonna have a bad day.
I would recommend one of the boroughs, or Nassau county. Granted I am 22, so I am looking to move out to a more exciting area. Besides the drug problem, Suffolk is a great place to raise a family.
I can't help you to much on the business advice.

Montauk is 3 hours by commuter train to the city, usually with a change of train from Diesel to electric at Jamaica (Queens) to go into the city. Not realistic.
I live in Montauk, but do not commute. The Hamptons, or the east end of Suffolk county on the south fork of Long Island, is a super-wealthy summer home area. A huge majority of people work in the service industries: building and maintaining homes, gardens, pools; unbelievable cars out here, high end restaurants and food in general. Serious money, but again, it's seasonal (summer: MD - LD). After Labor Day, it quiets down and people can drive again once the roads get unclogged. The Atlantic beaches can't e beat. Small waves for long board surfing, warm water (that would make a change from Calif.). Things go from rural out on the east end to suburban really fast as you head west out of the Hamptons area. Airport in Islip is served by Southwest. Ronkonkoma line (electric) is def the way to go to get in to the city, if you are near enough to drive and park at the station.Comment

I wouldn't say it is anyone area in particular. Its everywhere. In the rich areas, as well as the poorer areas. Keep in mind though, I have never lived anywhere else so I have nothing to compare it to. It could be like this everywhere I dont know, but I do know of 4 kids who have OD'd this year alone. 3 of them died.
This is going to be a very general statement, so take it with a grain of salt. If you stuck around the area after high school there is a very good chance your into drugs.Comment

take a look in Nassau as well. Closer to the city, nice areas, more of a suburbs. There are few places to stay away from (Roosevelt, Hempstead, East Meadow).Comment

After hearing everithing and my own era search and prior scout ting the area by making a trip out the (before thanksgiving) my first choice will be Ronkonkoma and its vicinity. It seems this is the further I can be to commute a d the closer to Hampton bays
Again I will be commuting 3 days out of the week onlyComment
