If you have to commute into the city a few days a week I would definitely recommend being closer to Ronkonkoma. Train service is pretty much every hour and you can go direct to Penn.
I live in Moriches which is on the south shore in between Shirley and Westhampton. I've driven to the city in rush hour traffic and I wouldn't want to have to do that commute frequently.
As has been stated before it is awesome out here in the summer and especially in the fall when the traffic dies down. That being said it is pretty boring out here in the winter. There are plenty of fishing/water sport activities to do and lots of really good restaurants to check out.

I work in the wine/food industry and my girlfriend is a CPA in Hampton Bays. If we can help you with any specific questions let me know.

ive been coming to the hamptons for about 8 years now each summer from manhattan and i can tell you these not may places that are as good in the summer or the fall.
granted its not saint barts but its not trying to be and has its own appeal and laid back have a drink vibe (at least here in sag harbor which is Southampton).

as far as drugs? thats more of a western suffolk problem like wyandanch, bellport, kings park and the surrounding areas but not limited to such.

in the hamptons? not so much unless your rich and like to take the occasional skiing trip.
i owned a nigh club in Southampton for 3 years so im speaking with first had knowledge and accounts.

it really depends on what your looking for but i can brake it down for you this way if you like.
west Hampton is closer to the city by 15-18 mins but its quit costly and DEAD in the winter.
its a very heavy Jewish community as well, i say this only to let you know in case you happen to be Jewish as i love all people regardless of color creed or religion.
in fact they lovely call it jewhampton and has one of the BEST bakerys EVER (westhampton peach bakery cafe).

then you have hampton bays which is a blue color/up and coming area that is still a great party town.
friends and i go to rumba and cowfish at least once a week, it really is a good time with friendly people.
rumba is kind of an enigma in the seance there is no cultural or financial divide when your there.
you can literally be a landscaper or commercial fisherman and sit next to warren buffet and strike up a convo, its all about having a good time.
3 weeks ago i was getting hammered with congressman tim bishop and his wife, true story.

then Southampton very nose in the air look at my Ferrari Bla Bla Bla and super expensive other than barristers in town who also happens to have the best food in Southampton..FACT!

then there's Bridge Hampton, its like Southampton but with alot less pretension and about 1/4 the size.

then theres sag harbor that is really the best town in the hamptons which is very wealthy but with NO pretension what so ever and is a coastal boating town.
yes sag harbor is part of southampton but southampton town is 20 mins away and it doesnt feel at all like part of sag harbor.
it has the best restaurants (16 of them in a 3 block radius) and always has something going on even in the long winter months.

then theres east hampton but thats way out of where your looking to be so...

now if you find that the hamptons is just to far for you another place that ive lived and LOVED was sayville, its about an hour from NYC and has a great mix of upper and middle class and is VERY family oriented.
its also been voted the most friendly/polite town in the US.
its good all year round as people live there full time and is one of thos "whole town comes out to see the high school football team kinda places"
good places to eat and a GREAT place to raise kids.

sayville and all of the other places ive mentioned are places you can feel safe to leave your doors open at night and the keys in the car if your worried about safety

if i didn't live in NYC or the Hamptons Sayville would easily be my next choice.

if you have any other specific questions like shops food safety just ask.
        k hope that helped.

I've lived in Hampton Bays for 2 years. Live in Brooklyn now, but travel out to LI alot during the summer to work on my car and spend time with friends and family. Hampton Bays is not exactly what I would consider the "Hamptons" unless you're on Dune Road. Over the last 10 years the boom of Hispanic's in Hampton Bays is extremely large. I used to commute from Speonk to NYC daily for interships when i was younger and its doable, but with a family would not suggest it at all. Near the Ronkonkoma line is better for more consistant service to NYC. Keep in mind that rent is still expensive almost everywhere in LI. Monthly LIRR tickets can be 275-450 depending so consider that if you have to commute but are balancing rent costs.

The biggest question is what is it that you plan to do? Feel free to PM if you have any more question about anything.

Also, after visiting CA and driving the coast, it seems insane that one would consider this. LOL.

          Cheers!
