Having previously researched TDI swaps for my Jeep, I believe there is a way to make a TDI fully mechanical. That being said, I don't think it matters much.

No, but it's been documented on the forum. It's still a relatively uncommon swap, and not as easy as an S52, but it seems to be getting some traction now.
