I'm putting this in a new thread so that all of the part numbers are easier to find. I feel that the old thread has gotten to long and difficult to navigate, and I've collected all the information needed in one useful post, as I just did this install after reading the old thread in its entirety.
I did this installation on my '87 325is which had sealed beams. I recommend that you use the proper connectors, as it is much cleaner and makes it easy to disconnect the headlights in the event that you need to replace a bulb, etc.
Recommended Parts:
- 2x High Beam Connectors (White) 61-13-1-378-417
- 2x Low Beam Connectors (Yellow) 61-13-1-378-419
- 4x Circular Wiring Connectors 61-13-0-007-445
or optionally get six if you want to use these plugs to connect the city lights without splicing the connector on your Euro ellipsoids (see below).
High and low beam connectors are part number 6.
Circular wiring connector is part number 3.
Procedure:
There will be three wires going to the old low beam. The ground wire is always brown. To figure out which of the two remaining wires is for the low beam, you can either use a volt meter, or remove a dome light and use it as a test lamp like I did. After determining the proper wire, crimp one circular wiring connector onto the ground wire and one onto the low beam wire. Snap on a low beam connector. Leave the third wire disconnected, but make sure that you cover the end with some electrical tape or other insulation so that it does not ground out on the frame and blow a fuse.
The high beams have only two wires. Simply crimp on the circular connectors, and attach a high beam connector.
To wire up the city lights, I spliced two circular wiring connectors into my the wiring for the side markers, which is conveniently located in the bumper near the headlight assembly. The circular connectors push onto the pins in the city light connector and are held tightly in place with just friction. My local BMW parts guy could not find the proper one, but this seems to work fine.
Repeat for the other side, and then snap all of the factory connectors into the proper sockets on the Euro ellipsoids.
To keep the high beams and low beams on at the same time, jump pin number 30 on the high beam relay to pin number 30 on the low beam relay. The pins are numbered on the relay itself.
Congratulations, you're done, go drink a beer.
