    Ulrich's E30 Vert Project

Hey guys! I figured I'd post a thread on my running WIP.

(For those who don't wanna read, TL; DR Bought an old E30 that was rough around the edges, but is turning out nicely so far.)

    Here's some images:

I bought this fairly well maintained E30 cabby a couple months ago as my early Christmas present for $2800. Came with a set of XXR 531 CCW reps on like-new sport tires. Has minimal rust, but I still need to peel back the carpets to make that full call. The undercarriage is clean, trunk has a few spots of surface rust, and there's a small bit of surface rust on the hood that I don't notice unless I look really hard. Bet that's rare in Colorado, huh? I thought the whole deal was going to go smoothly with the car having no problems. My dad helped me inspect the car before we bought it to make sure it was alright, and had me test drive it. Me being 19, I haven't experienced a RWD car other than my dad's E60 M5. I opened it up on the highway and it drove nice and smooth for a car with an awkward suspension setup. PO had the front on lowering springs and the rear on stock. Stereo was a big step up from my DD '97 Sentra, and that's funny, considering it's a good six years older than it. Interior was well worn. I definitely need to get some upholstery done. Cracked dash. The tach didn't work, but that's expected. The auto box pulled fine, didn't slip out of gear. A shame I couldn't get a manual, but this is gonna be my cruiser/DD for now, not some gymkhana king or autox star. I do intend on getting a 5 spd Getrag later on once I get everything all sorted and have the income to do it, and once I learn how to drive stick, lol.

Ended up taking it home with me, a big smile on my face. I tried some further tests, the lights being one. The moment I pulled the headlight plunger, my stereo decided to shit itself and the dash started smoking. After some inspection, it turned out that the headlight switch was fried and I had to buy another one to replace it. There was also a few instances of shitty wiring as apparent by the stereo and hideous DEPO angel eyes, which I found to have been glued in, since the PO broke the adjusters. So I can't drive it at night. I took it to my local mom 'n pop mechanic and they said the car was mechanically sound except for the valve tick, and that it was mostly electrical gremlins. They adjusted my valves, replaced the valve cover gasket, changed/flushed the tranny fluid and oil, replacing an o-ring that was causing a small leak from the oil pan, switched out my indicators for clear ones I bought aftermarket, disconnected my OBC because it wasn't working (not that they ever do from what I hear lol) and informed me of a few other issues:

    1. The Driver's side foglight housing is all rusted and corroded, the wiring exposed, so it would need to be replaced.
    2. There's a short that's preventing the right side running lights (tails, turn indicators, parking lights and license plate lights. Fuse 23 kept blowing every time they tried to replace it. I believe 23 also controls my instrument cluster lights.
    3. Cam lobes are starting to show signs of wear.
    4. Suspension up front is a little too low. They suggested I get stock springs all around.

Otherwise, the car is in pretty good shape. I have a few plans in the long run for my new baby. Gonna get some yellow fogs, lamin-x the high beams, get a set of basketweaves or Borbet Type As at some point, get the stock headlights back on there, front and rear strut braces, new sway bars, a Magnaflow or Remus exhaust kit, a shit ton of bodywork to make it look factory new, and I may consider getting it resprayed in Technoviolet because I really love the color.

I hope to get plenty of advice and meet all sorts of cool enthusiasts here in Colorado Springs, and on these forums!

        Update:

I recently got a hold of the clock to take the place of the OBC, and I've managed to pick up an IS lip for 35 bucks from a local junker. Might not put it on and just sell it to somebody else, but I'll try it on once I finish the front suspension refresh.

Oil levels are fine, no leaks that I've noticed. Recently topped off the coolant as it was a tad low and took it to a track down in Denver for a few laps, just to see what it was like. I love it when the rear swings out. It's so easy to control for me. For a flexi-flyer, it's pretty solid around the bends.

Will update periodically and post pictures of parts picked up.

          Update Deux!

Because I'm a dork, I decided to name my cabby Eevee!

Out of my curiosity to find a short and with my lack of knowledge, I took the car to a BMW/Mini specialist here in the Springs. They took out my dash to find that my dashboard wiring harness was shot. Fried in some areas, covered in electrical tape and zipties.

Pretty much a fire hazard waiting to happen as I saw. I had them order me a new harness so I'll have NO electrical problems afterwards. I'm also gonna see if they can figure out why my tonneau cover isn't closing completely with the top down. It was a power top, but it was converted to a manual droptop. I'm heading there tomorrow to check the status of the car. Will post pictures and show off my new headlights and fogs I'm installing.

If you figure out why it's not closing let me know haha I have the same problem on the exact same side! I think it has something to do with the top not going into the compartment as it should. So it might need to be adjusted. I messed up my power top the first night I got the car and since then it didn't close properly, once I took out the rods that move the top the top set lower and the cover closes a little better but not great..

            Nice car!

              Update Drei:

So, I stopped by the mechanic to see the status. They took my dash out and after inspection, this entire harness is borderline useless. There's a TON of electrical tape everywhere, zipties and singed wires. The harness should be here by the end of today or by tomorrow and I should be able to have the car back by next week. Hype!

I asked about the tonneau cover not wanting to close and I was told it might be because it was originally a power top converted to a manual top, there might be something keeping it from shutting and being flush with the body that they'd have to see when the top is down.

Here's a few pictures of things being done and the nightmare my dash harness is. Those are Depo smileys and yellow foglights with 3000K bulbs installed already. It's gonna look great once it comes out of the shop, especially after I get the yellow film on the highs.

I am a bit curious about my gauge cluster though. Something is off about that hole in the side and those batteries. I can't quite put my finger on it, though. It might just be me being paranoid about nothing.

                Another Update:

After talking a bit with the mechanic, who apparently also owns an E30, he's gonna hook me up by changing out my springs all around with his set. I'm trading him my Vogtlands for his low mileage OEM springs. This is great news for me since I won't have to freak out about potholes as much. I should have it by Tuesday or Wednesday and I'll be sure to take pictures of the changes!

                        Another update:

So, a little bit of bad news. They got sidetracked with other customers, which is understandable. I won't be getting Eevee for a bit, and I'm okay with that, as I have another car. They have a business to run and my car's a hefty chore. They have started with the harness and have taken out the headlights. A lot of the foam inserts inside the dash and plenty of wires from the original harness have been damaged, plastic disintegrated and apparently the PO sprayed the interior with vinyl paint, supposedly to make it look better to sell it quicker. So it's flaking around everywhere. That might also explain why I get black stuff all over my hands whenever I was cleaning the interior.

They've also noticed an oil leak, but they haven't gotten to it yet. They'll take a look while it's on the lift. I'm just glad I have no rust to worry about. I'll be keeping it there until it's perfectly ready to go and safe to drive without worry. Still a bit bummed, as I didn't get to cruise with the top down this spring break.

In a month or so, I have a set of these XXR's to put on that I'm currently working on cleaning up a bit:

Here's a photo from a month or so ago when I was trying to figure out what they were. I know XXR has a little sketchy reputation, but they came with the car, and there's not a likeliness that I'll end up dishing out a ballsload for some big name wheels.

Maybe I'll get some ESM BBS reps, or pick up a set of euroweaves and have them painted gunmetal grey. Who knows, but I think these XXR 531s are gonna look hella good on.
