my solution was to go to a local pawn shop and purchase a big box of random loose drill bits for 25.00. in my case, i probably wound up with about 4-500 bits. i went through and picked out three sets of bits that are 90% american/german. i keep one set in my truck, a set in my garage and a set in my work shop an hour away. i still have hundreds of bits left over.
i then purchased the drill master drill sharpener. it takes a little practice to get used to this machine but in a short time i was able to achieve fantastic results. i now have good quality sharp drill bits for life. whenever i break one off or mess it up in some way, i just grab another one out of the box or resharpen it in the sharpening tool. about every 2 years or so, i just resharpen all three sets at the same time.
