If you're worried about cost or parts and reliability, you shouldn't!!!!
I went from an 84 Rabbit that I replaced several parts with only OEM VW parts, jsut to have them fail shortly thereafter...total garbage IMHO!
Then I purchased a nicel little 86 e30 325es that I thought was going to be a headache, considering it had 100kms more than my rabbit had. But to my suprise, the car was far more reliable, and the parts were equivalent in price, and everythign had a much more robust feel incl the interior parts, trim etc. (quality-wise the VW stuff was total garbage..kinda like the old saying, garbage in-garbage out).
Overall, these old BMW's are easy to maintain, cheap to repair, and much more fun to drive than a FWD car.
