E30 Turbo bypass valve...who is running one?

    Hi Guys,

Im looking for what my options are on running a Bypass valve instead of a BOV. Im building up a turbo E30, and REALLY do not like the blow off valve noise. (to me it just reminds of me of some stupid kids ....hey look at me.... in my area.) I guess Im showing my age.

Plus i have a VW Meyers Manx dunebuggy that I built like 15 years ago thats fuel inected and turboed with a Tial 50mm BOV, and I really want something a bit more stealthy in my BMW this time around. Its okay in the buggy as its loud and in your face (metalflake purple)...but not really wanting this in my E30.

So If i were to plumb this back in via a bypass valve, Im thinking I really need to put this closer to the turbo. (I originally was going to have it over after the intercooler) but then running a 1" or so hose over to the non pressurized side becomes a huge issue.

So I assuming most have the BPV installed before the intercooler, so its easier to get it back before the turbo.

    Is this correct?

Any pics of your setups would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!
    Jay

Bypass valve plumbed back into the intake would probably be alot quieter than a bov, that and if you made an airbox like many of the OE manufactures do, it would be quieter.

I think you want to have the bypass valve after the inter cooler so that you are sending cooler air back in front of the turbo to be compressed again.

Exactly why i want to use a BPV and not a BOV. Does it matter if this is before the intercooler? It would still be after the turbo. (pretty much right after the turbo but before the intercooler. I could easily then plumb it back up to before the turbo. (if i can fit it all in there on the passenger side.)

A BOV would def be an easier route to go, and i usually see them after the intercooler, but before the maf. (blow threw)

            Thanks

I don't have a link but I remember there was a guy selling bpv on e30tech and a lot of people were using them. I think some of the guys were running two, on closer to the throttle body and the other by the turbo for higher boost builds

the setup you describe is how most manufactures do it in their cars, but often the turbo will have a casting design so that no extra plumbing is required. Here's an example, which links the compressor side to the charge side:

                  '84 318i M10B18 147- Safari Beige
                  NA: 93whp/90ftlbs, MS2E w/ LC, 2-Step
                  Turbo: 221whp/214ftlbs, MS3x flex @ 17psi

Depending on what your goals. I am only running at most 10psi. Needs to be within 12 inches of the throttle body.

If your plans are a 400+ monster than ya run two. Remember these are designed for turbo porsches. Out little M20/M30 will be just fine with it.
