    M20 connecting rods

    Hi guys,

    Anyone know which rods are good for ~500hp m20b28 ?

    I heard that the weak point in the stock rods are the length + bolts, so people are putting in m20b27 rods (130mm) instead of m20b25 (135mm) + ARPs rods bolts instead of the stock ones .. is this true?

    I'm not looking to spend $$$ buying rods from vac motorsport if there are another solution suits my power goals

    I use this connecting rods on my m42 turbo...Also I was use on another projects connecting rods from this company!!!
    Part number FCPRHB1304822FCP Engineerings H-beam steel connecting rods kit (6 pcs.) 130mmBMW E21, E28, E30, E34 - 2.0 2.3 2.7 (M20B20, M20B23, M20B27)

    PS Stock connecting rods are good for 100 Nm for cylinder!

      there are heaps of different aftermarket rods in price from ~600 to 1400 that will handle that and come with ARP bolts. for a budget set id look at Molnar but for FI id not be stinging out and there are better brands. forget about 130 mm rods that will not be beneficial
      89 E30 325is Lachs Silber - currently M20B31, M20B33 in the works, stroked to the hilt...

              No, it actually takes 2-3 sets before you can put together a decent set. The difference is the QC. Out of the box the tolerances and weights vary quite a bit (and the knock-off arp hardware is funny [yes I've directly compared the two and talked to arp]). Then you've got a fair amount that are simply bad forgings.

              That being said ,admittedly, these intro-level h-beams are coming from the same place. If its advertised under VAC's "SP-Components", Ireland Eng. "H-beams", or others then you can expect that the hardware is changed and proper QC is done. When a new batch comes in (literally a couple hundred rods) I usually dispose of a good %10 of them after initial inspection before putting sets together. This is NOT done by your basic ebay-supplier (a la' cxracing) in South El Monte or Texas. I'm also not sure on the actual QC Eagle does on these rods.

              However, even at $600-$900 for a properly inspected/assembled set, it's still a relative bargain for them comparative to others. And lastly, yes I've seen at least 3 engines in the last couple years that have failed due to rather obvious and easily-avoidable h-beam rod flaws (this is outside of the normal "kid just puts in new rods with no sizing and expects them to work well" scenario).


              EDIT: I see that for some strange reason you want to keep 130mm rods and some oem cast pistons rather than forged pistons and 135mm rods. The above applies only to 135mm rods.

                I've a 84mm crank so with 130mm rods, piston will sit perfect in the block

                  i assumed you would want custom pistons with 500hp, but yes with stock pistons that combo needs a 130mm rod which is bad because there are fewer quality brands in that length.
