Not sure what you mean. A lot of classic sports cars had a dog-leg shift pattern: Euro E30 M3; 3.0CSL; Porsche 928; various Ferraris; etc.

Once you get used to it, it's pretty sweet. You don't use 1st gear or reverse on the track anyway, so it's nice to have them out of the way.

The plastic panels are prone to fading faster. Most of the original paint 16v's I've seen have suffered from this. Great cars though! I loved mine, aside from working in the ridiculously narrow trans tunnel.

A friend of mine enlisted my help back in January in driving a euro 16v from Irvine, CA back to NC. Made for a great trip, and aside from the car mis-behaving one time very briefly (it had been parked for over a year before this trip), it never skipped a beat! Met some really awesome people along the way, and had a great time.

I don't understand what you mean.. It's in the same spot as any other BMW-- Far left past the detent and up. I daily drove one for 2 years and it was a great gearbox. Despite what some think, you don't drive it and forget that it isn't a standard H-pattern and miss every shift. It works well, and think about it-- how often do you downshift into first gear, even street driving?

Wait, you and Trevor drove a 16v across the US? That must have been... nostalgic? I guess I've been out of touch for too long..

Well, Emre, it's certainly not as nice as your example but if it were my friend would be asking more money. As someone else pointed out, the body kit is prone to sun fade and after 25 years this is what happened.

Considering you have never driven this car, I'm intrigued by your comment "there are a number of things that make me nervous about this car". As for being able to do better, I say show me ONE 2.3 16V at this price point (no automatics).

Lots of comments in here about prices, but truth is; apart from a few examples, these are still "cheap" cars. My old car posted above was sold for $5k late last year with new suspension, euro lights, the AMG wheels, and only 170k miles. Searching Craigslist will pull these cars up constantly in the $25-3500 range. And sure, there may be a number of ads asking 6-10k, but that certainly doesn't mean they sell for that amount.

Your friends car looks like a fairly solid example, albeit with high mileage. His asking price is probably a fair value for the car, though the east-coast market for these is somewhat weak.

It doesn't work like that at all. Reverse is still offset from first and has spring-loaded lockout, so it's impossible to accidentally go from first to reverse. I have a dogleg in my M535i (Getrag 265/5) and absolutely love it. It feels so natural and I haven't looked back. You essentially drive it as if it was a 4-speed box, which actually feels fantastic on the track or on a twisty run. In short, dogleg boxes are awesome.

Maybe you're right. I bought mine 2 years ago and there were plenty in the $3500-5000 range that had nowhere near 250k on the clock. But people have rediscovered the car. Especially after the Top Gear episode that everybody talks about. I guess I'm out out touch with prices these days.
