    Oil pump priming

When I used to build mopar engines I had a oil pump priming shaft I'd put in a drill to pre-oil the engine. Is there a way to prime the oil pump in my six? Is it possible (or necessary)? I was thinking about pouring a quart slowly into the oil filter housing but I already have six in the engine now.

Well, since I recently was able to start my motor, after a factory fresh rebuild, I needed to find a way to prime the oil system.
So here is what I did:
    Remove plug going to DME.
Ensure that the motor has oil.
Proceed to start the car, only it won't start since the ECU isn't plugged in.
I found it very helpfull to have a oil pressure gauge handy and to keep a jump box on hand.

What you're describing is just what I'm trying to avoid. The idea is to get some oil up into the mains BEFORE you turn the crank. No biggie.

If everything still has the assembly lube on it, it should be good. That stuff takes a little while to be cut down by oil.

As far as I know there's not simple way to prime these engines, unlike old V8 motors where you could pull the distributor and prime away.

yes do as you describe, pull the oil filter cap and pore one quart of oil in the filter housing. and then pore your 6 other quarts in the filler cap. then pull the relay with the green/purple tracer going to it. and crank away! it should only take about 5 full seconds of cranking for the oil pressure light to go off. then your ready to go. if you are not building pressure then make sure your dipstick is fully seated. also you can sort of prime the system by putting a air nossel to the dip stick tube and giving it a couple of blast. i would do that last though. for i dont know if thats such a good idea, just seen it done and it worked.

There is no way to pressurize the oil system without turning the crank on these motors.

Just crank it over 5 seconds at a time and watch your oil pressure. With cold oil, it doesn't take much.

couldn't you also put a wrench on the vibration damper bolt and spin away?

Why do that when you accomplish the same by spinning the motor over with the starter, and don't get all sweaty and nasty in the process? :)

I don't think you're going to be able to spin it fast enough by hand to generate any pressure. lol. ever done an M20 valve adjustment?

pull the fuel pump relay, crank the motor for a few seconds, done.

i just want to say that adding the quart of oil in the oil filter housing worked! started cranking and in less than 5 seconds, I got oil pressure!
