    M62 Non-Vanos (96/97/98) EWS options

I've been looking for a way to remove EWS from the DME for a while but I can't seem to find anything. What are the options for removing EWS?

    #2
I'm in the same boat. Best option at this point may be these guys out of Canada

    RPM Motorsports: http://rmsonlinestore.com/

Not sure what all they can do, or what DME's they work with. Their eBay auction shows one thing and the site seems to talk about something else. Give them a call or email them?

I'm subscribing because I'm in the same boat. Jonsku may have worked around it or he may have swapped over the keyring, EWS module and DME all together. Not sure how he did it, maybe he can chime in.

Also there is another user on here, the spelling of his name escapes me right now but he also claims to have a solution. I've made contact with him and it's been slow progress thus far. My second message has been responded to, just waiting now. I'll shoot RPM an email as well. This is the biggest stumbling block for my build as well. Most of the parts have been sourced and I'm hoping to be able to get time to remove the old M20 and finally get working! Maybe we can help each other, if you figure it out first, let me know and I'll do the same for you. Thanks.

Another alternative is to use an older harness (have not found solid documentation on what needs to be changed for this) and DME but I'm not sure how one would account for the additional .4 liters of displacement. But that has been done as well. I personally am not a fan of the swapping of motor parts even though others have done it.

Contacted RPM and they said they can do it although there is about an 8 day wait period at this time. More to come.

Shit, I forgot about this thread. We haven't put the engine in yet still acquiring parts. I appreciate your responses though, I looked at RPMs stuff a little while back and noticed they sell the whole DME/EWS package. To be honest it's cheaper($600) than deleting the EWS at $900:O

Not sure what I will go with yet, I've contacted so many tuners who said they couldn't do it, at least I found someone now I guess, and I'm in Canada too so maybe I get a fellow Canadian discount :rollseyes

Thanks for the responses, keep me updated on what you plan to do!

No problem. The question then is what ECU is pin for pin compatible in place of the 284 ECU? With that knowledge, there is no need to spend the higher dollar figure.

Well hopefully I can grab a 284 with all the EWS equipment attached. What I really need is a 540i parts car from the m62NV era. But as we both know those are few and far between.

Indeed. RPM doesn't sell the 284 DME without EWS. You can get the DME and key and ring here right now:

I have no affiliation with the seller, stand to gain nothing, cannot vouch for him/her. It's just something I found in my search.

Personally because I don't want EWS getting into the mix at all. So I will continue to look for an alternative until I can't find one.

Did any of the e39 v8s come with EWS2? My engine is a 96 m62NV which I'm guessing originally would have had EWS2? I'm just thinking that ews2 DME probably is a Non Vanos DME and probably the one I need.

I've emailed him (Dave) several times, but no response although I have a suspicion he can or is "close".

I managed to find a 96 M62B44 harness on eBay that looks like it'll take the 474 ECU which can be had from RPM with EWS deleted for a lot less than having them rework the 284 DME...
