    88ix: The White Knight

I got this car in July of 2009 when I was 16. On my first outing to look for a car, I was originally looking for a 4x4 of some sort. However, I saw this car and it was love at first sight. My dad and I test drove it, and a week later bought it. It had 175k miles, however that was only partially true. The original owner had new long block swapped in around '96. The car now has 185k miles, while the engine has gone about 85k.

    When I first got it...

    Volvo lip is gone

The first day I bought it I put in a cheap shift knob and and boot as the stock ones were torn. Some day these will be replaced with a door knob style shift knob and a nicer boot made of real leather. My next upgrade was a new head unit to replace the broken stock one. I put in a pioneer that I pilfered from my original car, a civic, that we had junked. Luke aka Stereoinstaller1 helped me out a lot. That year for Christmas I got 4 pioneer mids for the fading factory speakers.

The car has had an occasional check engine light that I have mostly ignored as it has had little impact on the running of the car. I looked into the problem eventually, and discovered what I thought it was due to, a cracked down pipe. I had that welded, but it was put on crooked and made the exhaust leak worse. I decided to swap in a set of IE shorties, which I don't like very much, in order to fix the problem.

However, recently performance and mpg has dipped and I decided that a good tune up was in order. I sent Blunt an email and within 3 days had a nice little collection of parts. Wires, cap, rotor, plugs, O2 sensor, coil and a t-stat. I have done all except for the cap and rotor as I was originally sent the wrong car, however Blunt quickly fixed that! I still have a CEL, so I will be getting a smoke test done tomorrow. I think it is my injector o-rings that seal the injectors to the manifold and my intake gaskets, as I can smell gas sometimes on start-up and I occasionally have an idle of around 1k.

    New parts!

I definitely needed new plugs, my old ones had cracked ceramic pieces on them.

The plug wire were looking a little brittle as well

    And the old O2 sensor

About a month or two ago I also decided to swap to plastic bumpers. I love the way it looks and can't imagine how people ever drive with db's.

Shortly I will be buying a set of GC coilovers. I will be sending them off to get the newly announced shortened struts and have them shorten my strut tubes and relocate and reinforce the sway bar link bracket. I also have a 93 octane mark d chip on the way and will install it once I fix my CEL. Anyone have a 173 ECU and 19lb injectors they would be willing to sell cheap? ;)

As for what I will do after that, I'm not sure. I really would love a new set of wheels but, that is far down the road. I will most likely pick up a set of Euro smilies, paint my trim and paint my tails red, straighten my valences and get an I lip.

The name is one that my neighbor gave it after watching my work on it all of the time.

will add pics when photobucket downloads them all!

Today I decided to start trying to clean some of the engine bay up. A steam cleaner, some simple green and a scrub brush did a decent job.

    Before:

After, it is kind of hard to tell

I will continue to work on it more when I get a chance.

Does anyone know where the other ends to these plugs connect to? I know the are for oil, coolant and wiper fluid. I just don't know where the other ends of them are.
    The orange one.

    By the fuse box.

    By the booster

Yes the red covers are gone!

I love white e30s! Maybe the orange wire is for the airbag impact sensor? Its an orange boxy thingy thats mounted in proximity to where that orange connecter is sitting?

I thought about that, but I think they are oil. coolant and wiper fluid, because on my check panel, they are always light up whether or not they are full. I just can't find the other end. Oh and on an 88 there are no airbags.

Personally, I'd steer clear of the shit knobs..

But seriously - I have big soft spot for the ix coupes - and it looks like you're off to a good start.

Ha ha! Thanks for catching that, I was in and out typing and grilling last night. Thanks, I love my car to death and can't wait to get that much closer to what I think is done.

It is quite nice in the winter. I have tried to get it stuck, but I can't. Even on crappy all seasons.

looks great man. generally, all orange plastic items are airbag related. but! you have an 88. so im not sure.

Thats what I thought. When I bought the car, it was from a dealership, and it had a few lights on on the check panel, which would fail emissions, so they unplugged them in order for it to pass emissions. I guess they couldn't sell a car without it passing emissions or some bull. I wanted the car, so I didn't really care.

Right now it is at a shop having a mechanic check for intake leaks. I am really hoping it is just the injector o-rings and intake gasket. I will update with pictures later.

I found out it was an intake manifold and throttle body gasket leaking.

I got those gaskets from Blunt today, thanks again Blunt! I also got my Mark D chip, thanks Downersp! Tomorrow the 173 ECU and injectors should be here. Monday my wooden shift knob should be here!

                      I can't wait.

Well, I hit a wall tonight. Lambo and I got the manifold painted and had no problem putting the manifold on. The bitch tube was no trouble with two people. However, we hit a wall. We can't get the injectors to go into the fuel rail. Any help there? They go into the manifold.

However, my ECU came. My injectors don't come until thursday though :(

Looks good man. Let me know how it runs once you get it all done. You don't have a 173 ECU?

This explains the fuel injector process, but no pictures. Good luck.

Is your car running sluggishly? Are you noticing a slight stumble as you drive? Chances are, your fuel injectors need to be cleaned.

No one makes this car anymore. The government won't allow them, normal people won't buy them. So it's up to us: the freaks, the weirdos, the informed. To buy them, to appreciate them, and most importantly, to drive them.

                            Nope, 88 came with a 153. I got a 173 today though.

Sick IX man. Know how you feel, I loved having my e30 during high school. Every minute of it.
Just graduated today, and it felt so nice cruising away from the football field.
