My BMW V8 engine build thread

Well, finally got the v8 for my e30 apart. Tomorrow I should have the cams removed and heads will be ready to be inspected/tested/rebuild by the same machine shop that worked on the m62 heads for the m62tu engine I worked on recently. This thing had a LOT of oil and coolant came out CLEAN ! So thats good. Once I put it back together with all new seals/gaskets/bolts/bearings I'll weight it as well.

My plan is to do basically almost the same as before on the m62tu + valve guides/valve job and most likely main bearings as well as rod bearings. I believe I can't really do the piston rings w/o having to re-hone and that can't really be done on these w/o sleeving so.

On to the pics, really like the dual-row chain setup vs the m62 single row. Also you'll notice lack of U-shaped guide and instead there is sprocket!

This engine has about 150k miles and shows LESS timing guide wear than the previous 2003 m62tu with 130k miles on it.

Has a regular 140amp air cooled alternator vs water cooled used on the TU.

Crosshatching looks like this on all 8

No damage in the combustion chambers, just normal usage stuff.

      Dual row timing chain/guides

Covers, pans will get blasted/tanked. Alternator/starter I'll have tested first before doing anything else.

I don't know if these are original gaskets or not. Heads have warranty stickers on them , so I think they might have been replaced once before.

I need to confirm if the heads were decked once or not though... so hopefully part numbers will tell and machine shop will measure the heads.

Nice wear, not bad at all for 150k miles

            engine arm/oil filter housing connections

            checkind rod and main bearings

            oil pump lines

Those bores look great. How does one determine whether an m6x has Nikasil/Alusil cylinder liners? Are these Nikasil?

Part number / casting on the block. M62s are all alusil, just the m60s had two different kinds.

Subscribing. I definitely see a V8 E30 in my future.

How much different are the M62 blocks vs S62's?

M60 and M62 blocks are similar, I've noticed M60 does not have oil squirters that the M62TU did. S62 blocks from pictures looks totally different , especially under the intake manifold side of things. There is a guy on BFC that has a good pictorial of S62 build, he fixed a damaged S62 with some welding.
