    What Tanny Oul

Hey guys, I have a '91 325I with a manual tranny. Drained the oil and it smells like gear oil because of he sulfur. Boof says look for a colored tag to determine oil type. Where would this be?

    TIA

        I'm just razzing you!

That with a green label and a 17mm hex drain plug uses MT-90, a red label and 17mm plug uses D4 ATF, and that with no label and a 15mm drain plug uses MTL.
        Passenger side of the transmission!

Gear oil is correct. I run 75w90 or 80w90.

I appreciate the reply and help. I have Vavoline 80W-90 and Vavoline 80W-90 Synthetic Blend. Synthetic blend better for this application?

I personally just use the regular old Valvoline or Castrol but it's ultimately up to you.

I'd put the synthetic blend in just because you don't change tranny oil that often. I use conventional in my engine.
The first car I ever rode in was an e30

i think that there if the drain plug is a 17 mm male [like a nut] then its auto trans fluid [before 91] and if its 17 mm female [you need an allen wrench] then its gear oil, i think.
as stated dont use gl5 it eats up the yellow metals like synchros.
the owners manual for '91 says non-hypoid lube but i couldnt find anything that said it was non-hypoid.
                      i used synthetic mtl.
