    Running an m20 on E85

    Anybody here done it?

I understand you need larger injectors..? but why?

Engine temps are cooler I understand, and I am guessing one would want to replace all the rubber fuel lines if taking this seriously.

    Lets discuss it!

EDIT: quick reading reveals that any rubber component in fuel system should be upgraded to alcohol friendly parts.
Also the ideal AFR with e85 is much lower, thus the bigger injectors (more fuel with same amount of air)

Basically, there is no reason to do it unless you are going turbo. All it gives you is shitty mileage and the warm feeling that you're giving money to one of the most overly subsidized industries in America.

It is 105 octane or so, so that means you can run around with higher engine compression without knocking...??

It is better for the enviroment.

Seriously though the only reason to use it is for more hp, because you can run more advance. Word of advice though, buy it by the barrel with good QC, word has it pump E85 can variy wildly with its RON rating.

It can and will corrode fuel fittings with continued use

It has a lower specific energy, so you have to squirt more of it in for an equal bang.

I'd build an electric E30 first. But that's me.

Well I guess that the larger injectors are needed because the ideal AFR is much lower, and the same amount of air is coming in.

It is bigger molecules than gas, another reason to you need the bigger injectors to flow more fuel.

Your mileage will suffer also as it is not as efficent of a burn compaired to gas.

Do it, give you a reason to go turbo :D

                    So, in a nutshell

Higher octane, but if I ran my m20 on a dyno with pump gas, then with e85... e85 dyno will be worse power?

Yes, without super high compression, lots of timing or boost, you will make less hp. Also, e85 can't be found everywhere.

E85 is available around us at a few stations. It is also a little cheaper, pretty popular with the Subaru crowd.

To do this you'd need to replace all the fuel system components with E85 compatible parts, switch to bigger injectors, and replace the DME with a MegaSquirt or other stand alone engine management computer. Or you might be able to get an acceptable tune with a war chip. But timing and fuel maps need to be quite different than what the stock DME has.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Just go to a station who has e85, fill up, run it for a week, and report back with butt dyno findings.

Don't make this harder than it has to be.

E85 costs 0.99 cents / liter vs. ~1.60€ for 95E10 and ~1.70€ for 98E5 in FIN atm :letitout:... costs me ~100 euros to fill up the E30 ffs :hitler: :curse:
