What's the best rearend (Diff) for M60 swap?

Getting ready to start collecting parts for a swap for my son and i have a question I have not seen answered yet. I've also done a quick search and didn't come up with a convincing answer.
I looking to a M60 Auto swap, what would be the best rearend for the situation.

    thanks

An M60 auto swap? into an E30? why?

Also, you spelled "tension" wrong in your sig.

Some people like autoboxes, some like manual boxes :)

Just completed one E30 V8 auto - swap. It's very nose-heavy, but if you like autobox - then why not?

That one has 2.93 diff (same as originally in E32 / E34), keeps the revs nice and low but if you would want to have a touch more acceleration I'd go for 3.15 or similar. It's five-speeder anyways, so I wouldn't go too much higher.

In my 6-speed manual I've 3.4 diff with 245/35-17 tires and the revs are a tad on the high side when on highway..

There is no 'best'. This is sort of a subjective question, so it's a matter of personal preference. Some people like closely spaced gears, some people like longer gears. Some people like being up high in the RPM's on the highway, others prefer the lowest RPM possible. Do you want max MPG on the highway, or max acceleration?

Best way to figure it out is put your numbers into a gear ratio calculator and see what RPM you'll be running in each gear at any given MPH. You'll also be able to see your top speed in each gear, what RPM's you'll be at when you shift at any given RPM, etc...

If you are using the 5hp30, here are the ratios:
          1st: 3.55
          2nd: 2.24
          3rd: 1.54
          4th: 1.00
          5th: 0.79
          Rev: 3.68

Just remember that a V8 automatic in the E30 requires fabrication work to the trans tunnel, it's not just a bolt-in affair. The 5 speed automatic is a humongous transmission, even compared to the 6 speed manual, which is a big transmission. The manual transmissions are a much "friendlier" swap... in case you weren't aware.

Got an extra TPS, purge valve, or intake temp sensor?

Oh yes, it is BIG! (here's a comparison pic between M20 + auto and M60 + ZF 5HP30: http://v8cabrio.kuvat.fi/kuvat/02_M2...+vs+M60_up.JPG ). The autobox itself weights around 120..130kg so it needs to have proper transmission mount :)

Actually the autobox will drop into the gearbox tunnel quite well, you need to massage the walls a bit with a sledgehammer - but surprisingly small amount anyhow..

Here you can find pictures on my latest E30 V8 swap for a friend (cabrio with autobox, AC, cruise, electric seats etc..); http://v8cabrio.kuvat.fi/#/kuvat/

                        I am personally offended! ;)

Tell your son to want a manual trans, it would be easier and more robust. That said, I would have sold you my auto trans in a heartbeat that I got from my donor car, but I scrapped it.

Here's my take on the Autotragic swap:

I *think* that the 5HP24 (BMW nomenclature: A5S440Z) and 4HP22 have the same pattern mounting the transmission to the bellhousing.

Get the 5HP24 bellhousing and mate up a 4HP22 to it. The 4HP22 can be built to handle the V8. That way you don't have the extra work involved in fitting the larger transmission. Also, the 4HP22's taller first gear will work better with the high torque and limited traction that an E30 V8 will have.

However, the bellhousing interface commonality remains subject to verification...

                              Nice topic.

I'm curious about the current v8 builds an diff/gear setup.
Like if a 2.xx diff with 6 speed still has crazy torque feelin.
