    PS delete/Steering rack advice

So if I didn't want to deal with my insanely leaky rack, would a Power steering delete be a good cheap option? Or would it be an awful idea with there never being fluid in the rack... I'm in a pickle here, E30 stock racks are wayyyy to expensive for the same damn thing. Doing a rack swap in an airbag car means I have to notch the firewall and or some other voodoo that I am completely inexperienced with. So I have come to the conclusion that if i can do a PS delete when the rack wont hold fluid than I will do it. Or rebuild it but I have yet to see a good writeup on how to do that.

You don't have to notch the firewall on airbag cars. I did the E36 rack swap in my '91 318is without the notch and it was fine. For all E30's you do have to do the steering coupler mod but its not very difficult.

You don't??? I have only seen such. Or spacing it.
I know the steering knuckle is a must and that doesn't scare me not does the piping.

I just did this swap in my car and it did need some modifications to the firewall.. Without the modification the column binds against the firewall.

Is there a way to space the rack from the subframe?

Pulled the rack out and do a full reseal. All you need is a long thin nose pliers.
Bought parts from me before? leave your feedback here

i wasnt able to fit a spacer.

i didnt even need to modify the knuckle, just bought a aftermarket steering coupler from IE motorsport.

When using a power rack without power, you need to fill the rack with fluid before capping it off. So a leaky rack will still leak.

See some say they have had success without the firewall being modified and some say they didn't have to. The guy who did spacers had a 318, so would the larger motor/oil pan have effect on not letting the spacers fit?

I bought a ps delete block from condor. dont miss it and dont even notice unless you are completely stopped trying to turn the wheel. but if you move even a little its easy again.

You actually don't need to do this.

A steering rack is a hydraulic system. If you're removing the hydraulic assist, there's no longer any need for hydraulic fluid in the system. Lubrication is necessary, but you certainly don't need a full rack of fluid. A bit of gear oil would probably be sufficient.

exactly. In fact, the factory rack is internally lubricated and there is no need to add anything. You don't even need to loop the rack as condor's delete plate suggests. Cap it off the banjo bolts with some tubing after you've dumped as much fluid out of the rack by steering lock to lock. I probably have over 10k miles on mine without issues.

I noticed immediately when my belt snapped. It's not bad without PS but I'll be replacing the belt for sure.
