So if I didn't want to deal with my insanely leaky rack, would a Power steering delete be a good cheap option? Or would it be an awful idea with there never being fluid in the rack... I'm in a pickle here, E30 stock racks are wayyyy to expensive for the same damn thing. Doing a rack swap in an airbag car means I have to notch the firewall and or some other voodoo that I am completely inexperienced with. So I have come to the conclusion that if i can do a PS delete when the rack wont hold fluid than I will do it. Or rebuild it but I have yet to see a good writeup on how to do that.

Pulled the rack out and do a full reseal. All you need is a long thin nose pliers.Comment

When using a power rack without power, you need to fill the rack with fluid before capping it off. So a leaky rack will still leak.Comment

See some say they have had success without the firewall being modified and some say they didn't have to. The guy who did spacers had a 318, so would the larger motor/oil pan have effect on not letting the spacers fit?1991 325i Calypso Coupe

A steering rack is a hydraulic system. If you're removing the hydraulic assist, there's no longer any need for hydraulic fluid in the system. Lubrication is necessary, but you certainly don't need a full rack of fluid. A bit of gear oil would probably be sufficient.Comment

You actually don't need to do this.

I noticed immediately when my belt snapped. It's not bad without PS but I'll be replacing the belt for sure.- Josh
