Sorry for the lack of any new information on this sale/thread. I have been hard at work on the wiring situation this past week. I think I have the problem narrowed down and in my opinion its pretty bad. I'm going to hold off on the sale because I will not sell it like it is. I'm going to track down some parts and fix this the right way. I'm glad I did not sell the car yet and for the new owner to be in this situation!! Sorry for the delays, new info, and bad news! Basically like M-technik-3 pointed out, I'm going to try another dme, or just replace the whole harness and upgrade to a newer dme. What I have found out is that the car alarm (wich is wired straight to the dme) shorted out the dme. Its fried pretty bad when I opened it up and looked at it. So time for a harness swap, yay me. Once again, sorry, Christian.

Also, with this news I may be selling my 87' 325 s50, so if any interest let me know.

the insulation and the paint under the hood look like they have been charred. maybe it's just the pictures.

That is the early style foam vs the matt insulation.

This sounds like the best plan. I don't know much, but I imagine you could get it to run off of even the 325i harness right? I imagine most connections would be the same, except for maybe some differences between US vs Euro things like emissions equip.
My e30 and e28 are both up for sale::

How early? My 1987 325is (US of course) doesn't look anything like that. I did have a Mercedes with that type of insulation, and it looked similar after I blew a hose which sprayed oil all over the engine bay. This, however, does not explain the paint which looks discolored.

Maybe I need to make a visual inspection and report back. I think a site visit is in order.:D

My hood foam was EXACTLY like that. You would touch it and it literally start to fall to pieces....the color was a dark brown like. My car (an 1984) never caught on fire etc. It's just an early style foam.

Yeah, the right side needs some work. I was just going to replace the door and fender and be done with it. Everything else is fine. While the PO had the car a truck backed into the door/edge of fender. So it was pushed in pretty good, and then pushed back out, and not the right way. I'm lucky its only sheet metal damage!
