Dont forget the 25 year rule for federalization or is it different for the active military?
It's no different. Car will need to be federalized. Unless you do it illegally. There are and have been and will continue that some cars come in wrong. But the US Military's shipping company at the present time knows and enforces the rules.
Best bet ship it to WillZ in Toronto. I am not advocating breaking the law but some things have come in via this method.
As a USAF employee I would not want to loose rankl or spend some time in Levenworth so be smart about it.
Advertise it in Stars and Stripes and sell it to an incoming family as fuel is so freaking expensive in UK. Or if time is short get a proper power of attorney and give to a buddy that won't screw you and sell it that way.
List it on www.e30zone.com and have a Brit pay the taxes to put back in their system.
Im not going to ship the car illegally and brits wouldnt have to pay anything to put it back int there system.
If I sell it locally then ill be happy, but figured I might as well post it up for some R3V people to see if they are interested. Once I sell the car and the owner wants it shipped to Canada then that'd be fine by me. After that point its up to them what they do with it.
Quote me a price shipped to port of baltimore?
I have family working at port I'm gonna talk to them about it tonight. So just the rust around door what about underneath and on the rockers?
I know in MD a car only has to be 20 years old to be eligible for historic tags. I will find out all the info and pm you back.
Why? if it is 21 years old it is exempt. Or am I reading the laws wrong.
There are three types of exemptions for non-U.S. version vehicles by an individual. Below is a description of each type of exemption along with the requirements you will need when importing your vehicle and the restrictions that will apply to your vehicle.
(a) Exemption for Non-U.S. Version Vehicles 21 Years Old or Older
The vehicle is 21 OP years old or older and in original unmodified configuration. Requirements:
● Importer must file with Customs, upon entry, an EPA Form 3520-1 declaring code "E." ● Customs may require proof of vehicle age. ● "OP Years" are determined by subtracting the year a vehicle was manufactured from the
year it was imported. Restrictions:
● The vehicle must be in its original unmodified configuration. ● Vehicles at least 21 years old with replacement engines are not eligible for this exemption
unless they contain equivalent or newer EPA certified engines and emission control systems.
8. Importing a vehicle that is at least 25 years old.
A motor vehicle that is at least 25 years old can be lawfully imported into the U.S. without regard to whether it complies with all applicable FMVSS. Such a vehicle would be entered under Box 1 on the HS-7 Declaration form to be given to Customs at the time of importation. If you wish to see that form, you may download a copy from our website at www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import. You should note that the 25 year period runs from the date of the vehicle's manufacture. If the date of manufacture is not identified on a label permanently affixed to the vehicle by its original manufacturer, to establish the age of the vehicle, you should have documentation available such as an invoice showing the date the vehicle was first sold or a registration document showing that the vehicle was registered at least 25 years ago. Absent such information, a statement from a recognized vehicle historical society identifying the age of the vehicle could be used.
The best way for this car to come over is to be imported into Canada, then driven across the border...
do not swap vins!!! You get rear ended and the insurance company and state will sue you in a heart beat, a local CCAer here in Seattle did that and ended up with a title fraud case in Washington. Easiest way to title a car is in Montana and Maine. That is what a few local people have done with cars from Canada or just wait until model year 88 turns 25. The prices will come down.
If I knew someone staying here another 4 years id have them hang on to it and I would ship it back. But I figured some people may know some legal tricks to get it into the states.
