So let me get this straight- you drove from NC to see a late model E30 with M3 5-lug suspension, perfect interior, that resides in Jersey(that means it is subjected to all kinds of weather), for $5500, and expected it to be structurally perfect?

    Sigh

"- two small non-structural rust spots: one on the rear apron under the tow hook, the other on the undercarriage of the passenger side by the front jacking point"

I was expecting surface rust. Or at most pitting. I guess the northern definition of no rust (by fredk's account) gave me the wrong expectation.

And I dont mean weld in a patch panel to repair the rust for $400 either. To do it properly and remove the innner rocker panel replace it with o.e. parts and replace the front section with the floor with o.e. parts would be 8-1200$ to be done properly aka not half ass it. And about being late, I could forward the text I sent at 9 saying I was at his place. Which was the predetermined time.

There are no other problems with the vehilce besides what he states. Yes the carpet is cut on the rear where a roll cage used to be. However, it is a very neat and clean cut. I wouldnt see the problem in patching it up. The vehilce drives well and handles as good. He was right on time had no problems or issues with what i had to say, great guy who took the time out to come and let me see the vehicle.

overdue update: the rust spot on the passenger side by the front jacking point is GONE. they cut out all the rust and welded in new metal. i thought they did a great job.

view of the repair from the inside:

view of the repair from the outside. there used to be a hole here -- no longer:

the iS lip also got a fresh respray:

i welcome anyone who is local (or not local) to come inspect the car!

I would love to come buy this and drive home to MI but the engine issue scares me, especially on a 10 hour trip back. Otherwise, I'd be out in a heartbeat

I know this won't necessarily persuade or dissuade anyone from buying, but for what it's worth, *I* would not hesitate to drive this car cross country today if I had to. I *have* driven it on not one, but two long distance trips last year (the first one 2000 miles round trip; the second one 1000 miles round trip, in the winter no less) without issue -- not waffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswafflesfooting it, either.

Yes it has a knock, but M20s have a reputation as being bulletproof and *I* personally don't think the motor will blow up anytime soon, if ever. The car has never failed to start up (it does crank occasionally but does start every time) and it has never left me stranded.

The knock is not that loud. I just wanted to mention it in the original post so that potential buyers knew that it existed.

                FWIW.

If the man was told no structural problems then he should expect NO structural problems, especially traveling from many states away. I'll even go so far as to say the potential buyer handled himself really well, because I would've been f'n fuming if I took that kind of time off of work and my personal life to go look at a car that ended up being misrepresented (whether purposefully or not it really doesn't matter, end result is the same). It's your duty as a seller to know what you are selling.

                  Bad situation for everybody..

While I appreciate the above sentiment and certainly regret the events that lead to where we are now, I have moved on (and have paid my penance I feel), I would think that the would-be buyer has moved on, and the issue that dissolved the earlier sale has been addressed. I think it is time to move on, and I trust others will agree -- I'd rather not use this as a venue to keep beating a dead horse.

                    Thanks for keeping this on-topic.

it's a faint knock, distinct from the tick. it's not just typical 12V sewing machine ticking.
