    FT: 1992 Mazda Miata (Massachusetts)

    Hi R3v!

I have a 1992 Mazda Miata that I'd like to trade straight-up for an e30. Its red and has 185k.

    The Good:
    • Strong 1.6l motor, always performed maintenance on time and always ran 93 octane.
    • 5-speed manual transmission shifts into all gears.
    • Very little rust, rocker panels are clean, drain holes are good.
    • New Parts: Clutch Master & Slave Cylinder, Thermostat, Alternator + Battery, Brake Rotors & Pads (replaced a stuck caliper on the rear as well), Alternator, all accessory belts, Spark Plugs & Wires, Air filter.
    • Snow tires mounted on 14' 1.8 hollow spokes
    • Replica Garage Vary front lip, no cracks
    • Front license plate relocation bracket
    • Passed MA State inspection 12/2011

    The Bad:
    • The previous owner backed into a wall, and damaged the rear bumper, finish panel, and passenger side quarter panel.
    • Top is in rough shape, it leaks. Beyond repair, needs to be replaced.
    • Interior needs work, HVAC vent control cable is broken.
    • Needs a valve cover gasket
    • Vibrates above 65. This could be the 65mph shimmy that early Miatas are known for, or it could be wheel balancing/alignment.
    • Headlight motors don't work, they are stuck in the up position.
    • Suspension is 20 years old, but overall the chassis is tight for a convertible.

It's daily driven, runs great, pulls strong all the way to red line.

I'm looking for any 5-speed e30 that can be driven away. If it needs a weekend of work and a small amount of $$ to work that would be OK too, but I am not interested in towing your car away.

I'm not interested in selling but in case a price is required, $1200.

    Thanks for reading!

I've owned several miatas and I mean several. IDK what you're talking about that they're known for that. It's either you have a bent axle or your frame is twisted from the rear end damage or you might be right, wheel balancing. Sounds like neglect more to me than, "they are known for that."

I have owned a few too.

No pics. No price. The [unibody] car was backed into a wall hard enough to damage the quarter panel. And despite half the car not working, someone took the time and money to throw a GV lip on the car. Dude....

Here's a pic of the damage before anyone else posts thinking my trunk is caved in or something:

I had it looked it when I originally purchased the car a year ago and 3 different body shops told me that the car was structurally sound, and swapping the panel from a donor car would do the trick. I haven't done it because I haven't had the time, welding is required, etc.

As for price, I'm not interested in selling. I'm looking to trade. If a price is required on this board then... $1200.

Thanks for the free bumps :-)

Edit: Compare this to every other Miata in the northeast with rotted out rocker panels that completely compromise the already lacking body stiffness due to not having a fixed roof.

You all can quit thread shitting -

I've personally been in this car and can attest to the fact that this car feels, runs and drives tight.

It's immediate needs are balanced wheels and a top, but seller is listing everything to make it a $2500 car.

Got an E30 that runs and drives that needs some work and want a fun ride that already has snow tires for this winter? Pick this up. The rest of you can fuck off.

well said, shame about that rear. I've always wanted an early miata, bet it's fun as hell on a nice day.

              Good luck with your sale.

Thanks! If I didn't live in Mass and was about to move and have an 80 mile round trip commute, I would definitely keep it. But I need something that's a little more practical for highway commuting in all conditions. The car is a blast to drive! Despite its condition and its quirks, it all goes away once the top is down and you're driving on a twisty road.

I agree with you that it is awesome to drive in twisty roads. They drive like go karts. I've owned 15 of them, no joke. Before I got into E30's I had 3 of them in my garage. 2 5 speed, 1.6 w/ hardtop and 1.8 and an automatic 1.6 for my significant other.

I also know a miata dismantler which made it easy for me to restore them. It's funny how prices have gone up so much. I used to buy them from $500-$1000. The most expensive one I bought was the 97 for $1200. But mind you it had the Racing beat sways and the frog braces on the side. Tien lowering springs. 97k miles. The headlight was winking at me when I bought it. (literally) the right pop light went up and down and the paint was faded.
I spent about less than a thousand on it to restore. Top was trashed so I replaced that too. FREE BUMP

Your car has potential for someone who has an eye for it. I hate body repairs personally. But I wish you luck. You will find someone to trade someday. But with my experience, more Miata owners are moving on to E30s. So posting here might be shooting for the moon. But you'll never know.

                      I am on miata.net.
