Overheating in motion but back to normal at rest? That's a water pump, my friend. Ask me how I know... :(

The trouble is the impeller blade. At revs not much higher than idle, the coolant is able to slow and stop the impeller while the shaft spins merrily along on the outside. Slow the engine speed and the impeller can spin again and move the coolant. Everything will look normal; temp is good at idle, pressure will be good, fan will clutch over, etc. You may even think the thermostat has fused itself shut or something... but it will overheat if you put it in motion.

    Get that fixed, my friend!

Btw, my '91 Laguna Green 235i is a 5sp manual. And has an is spoiler. 8-)

There was never anything about overheating in motion but normal at rest. You must have misread my post. I meant for it to mean I drove it hard and the gauge was reading correctly and i let it sit and the guage was reading correctly. Are you in the states with your lagoon? That would be the first one i have heard of.

i just read that you are in MD, did you put the tranny in yourself?

It was almost pegged in red after 2 blocks. And IIRC, after it sat a little, and more coolant was added (It was about 1 qt low of coolant), it started to jump back and forth. Not sure if thatd just be the gauge. And also, how is just the gauge replaced? I didnt know they came out of the whole cluster.

Just be absolutely positive it wont over heat before driving 4 hours to go buy it basically lol

I understand concern, overheating is no joke. I have however been driving this car in 100 degree heat for a few days now and the needle has never been further than straight up. I know these cars and I know this is not a problem. I have bleed the system correctly on top of adding the gauge.
