I am gonna add to everyones suggestions here: study. Learn a BUNCH about these cars before you get into one.

For example, you said "85-90 318i or is" and those are radically different cars. 318i in 85 was the M10 motor, 318i in '91 was an M42 and they did not really exist in the 5 model years in between...

If you do find a good shell, the stupid little parts add up like you will never believe.

There's also an S50 E30 here in Charlotte for $6k. A bit out of your budget, but that's what you should go for. Screaming deal.

For those non-believers, i just missed out on a nice early model coupe w/Euro bumpers for $900. Wish i would've seen it a week earlier. Just gotta keep an eye out and hope someone doesn't know what it's worth.

Anyone who is selling an e30 for 500 has obviously not done any maintenance to it for a long time, which can get pricey and/or scary really fast.
