    WTB: e30 vert

    Preferably:
5 speed, but will consider Automatics.
Reasonably close to or in the NY/NJ/Penn/Conn area, but will stretch.
One that is ready to handle being a 2-3 times a week and
One that doesn't require any major work.
    Thanks for reading,

      Jron,

Get a hold of Dannyg, he has a super nice vert, it does have rear body damage but an easy repair. Good luck and make sure you share what ever you decide to buy.

you should take a look at this vert in VA. it has fresh paint and sounds pretty solid. it was listed on here awhile ago, but here is the link to its posting on a local website.

Thanks, You guys have already been very helpful.
                Question:
I spoke with somebody up North and he thought I was crazy to want to get into an e30.
I had told him that the Car was mostly going to be a spring/summer/fall weekend car, but that I would log a decent amount of miles on it in the summer(hwy and local) and that although It won't get used a ton in the winter, I will occasionally need it in the winter.
He felt that was close enough to daily driver usage and that this should not be my ONLY car, but is much more appropriate as a second car. He said, beyond the reliability issues, it would be all over the place in the rain, and god forbid if it ever snows and I need to get somewhere.
My dream felt a bit kicked in the face.
                Thoughts?

Was this an E30 owner you talked to or just someone that pretends they know a lot about all things BMW? Keep the dream alive: E30s are as bullet proof as they come and there is absolutely NO reason why you can't use one as a DD.

Reliability issues? I have friends with brand new cars that have had more issues than any E30 I've ever owned. As long as the timing belt and water pump have been addressed (along with timely oil changes) the M20 has terrific longevity and can rack up big 6 figure mileages.

All over the place in the rain? I wish my vert had enough power to break the rear loose... seriously, with a good set of tires and some judicious use of the throttle E30s are solid wet weather performers and very balanced. Any E30 that is "all over the place" is likely suffering some serious suspension / alignment issues.

I have found that 90% of people talk out their ass and really have no idea what they are talking about. Listen to the people on R3V, shop smart, and keep looking for YOUR vert. Good luck!

Sounds like this is what your guy from up north was doing.

                      cough cough... bullshit... cough cough.

this guy must also think that everything needs to be done at the shop for 100 dollars an hour. There are plenty of those people around. Find someone on here that drives a e30 daily and see if any of them is complaining...

however, with any tuning car, if you stiffen up the chasis so much and its rear wheel drive, it will be ultra sensitive in inclement weather.

I have a 91 318i 5spd convertible and it's daily driven - actually it is driven about 114 miles PER DAY, 5x a week - and on the weekends, probably about another 100 total miles Sat/Sun... in all weather conditions, in NEW JERSEY...

NEVER AN ISSUE... never a problem in the rain or bad weather either... The car handles the twisties excellent, it gets excellent gas mileage (been getting on average about 30mpg, which equates to about 400 miles a fuel filling - this is not running the tank dry either)... Even though it's a vert, it's still quite comfortable to drive daily and has plenty of trunk space (if you need it). As for road noise, surprisingly, being a vert, it's not as noisy or as loud in the interior as most other makes/brands of convertibles - but then again, my top & windows seal up nicely as well...

As for any reliability issues - that's all going to depend on how well the vehicle has been maintained previously and how well you maintain it going forward... Keep up w/ the basic maintenance and the car should/would run basically forever... Tires, brakes, oil changes, coolant flushes, tune ups, shock/strut replacement - that's all common BS that anyone would do with ANY brand/make/year of vehicle, especially a daily driver... As for parts replacement or costs - there are TONS of online vendors of which sell genuine and/or OEM BMW replacement parts for very good prices (ie: less than the BMW Dealer)... If you can do your own work, you save yourself a ton of labor $$$ (regardless of vehicle you own)... As for working on an E30 - freakin simple as eating a cupcake... these E30's are NOT complex at all, not to mention there's a TON of BMW forums w/ TONS of tech, not only just plain text tech, but tech w/ actual pictures showing one how to do or replace part A,B,C etc...

Don't fear the E30 - and please, step away from whomever you are talking to up "north"... as based on what they are telling you, they know nothing about the BMW E30 (convertible or other)... Tell whomever you were talking to, to set the crack pipe down... get real world opinions right HERE...

                        :)

best of luck on your search..
