I am not entirely sure. I know that in my mercedes the airbag was a system that came with a knee bolster. If the e30 airbag system is similar maybe the presence of a bolster affects the mounting or the swing of the pedals. Maybe someone else can chime in.

btw the only difference between a non air bag and a air bag one is a extra support that was added to help brace the shorter column on the air bag cars
so a air bag one will work with a non air bag car if the extra support is removed and a non air bag will but it wont have the extra steering column support.

Also, on my swap, my non-airbag pedal box didn't have the spring stop on the front to the left of the box.sigpic<< wrecked

Not having the support won't do anything I have the airbag pedal in a early non airbag without the left outer support and it works fine.
