the 380 is the best of the bunch, direct replacement for the crappy 153 and slightly better but virtually identical to the 173.

    glws!

I understand the 153s are less desirable due to having two PCBs instead of just one (like the 173 and up), but what makes the 380 superior to the rest?

the 153 has the twin layer PCB, motronic 1.0 chipset and a worse idle controller

the 173 is the newer motoronic 1.3 with 'Stomp test' capability and more codes

the 380 is a 173 with revised circuitry and more codes (even 173 chips work in 380s) :)

Thanks for the info. So does that mean I can't perform a stomp test if I have a 153?

            I am 99% sure you can't stomp test a 153.

              You can't.

And I'm not 100% on the procedure, but I believe for the 153 you do the same 'technique', i.e. 5 quick ones, but it's with turning the key over. Into the on position that is, not turning the engine over.
