Dumb question on the M20 coolant hoses - I have an 88 and 89 325i. are these compatible? Looking like that is the thermostat housing, external to the engine (mine is on the block)

I know for sure coolant hoses on the 87 and 89 incompatible. I'm less sure of the 88 as I don't know when things changed over to what's on the 89. Definitely verify before going forward.
