For sale is a complete m50 swap, pulled out of my 85 325e. I installed it back in 2009, it had 220k miles on it, and I put 30k miles on it since then. It runs great. No smoke, no burning oil. I checked out the cylinders with a bore scope, you can still see the perfect cross hatching from the factory. I daily drove this car 80 miles/day, and would have no second thoughts driving it across the country.
What you get:
-94 m50b25tu engine, pulled from an automatic 525i. Complete with harness, MAF, etc...
-Getrag 260 transmission from an e30 325i
-Shaved m20 flywheel (shaved for oil pan clearance, was resurfaced too)
-Sachs clutch kit, new at time of install
-Ebay stainless long tube headers, into a Y pipe, into a single 2.5" pipe, to a magnaflow cat, to a 2.5" in and out Borla Pro-XS muffler. All stainless steel.
-s50 cams installed, vanos seals replaced, upgraded to the newer intake cam spring plates
-413 DME with tune for the M3 cams. Dyno'd 188whp
-Modified e21 brake booster
-Solid UHMW engine mounts
-Modified factory trans brace, made for stock e30 rubber mounts
-m42 radiator (30k miles) and hoses I found to fit this setup perfectly
-e30 driveshaft with newer CSB and guibo (I think I have maybe 3k miles on them)
-Proper e30 temp sensor installed for gauge cluster
-Probably other stuff I'm forgetting. Let me know if you think of something that would normally be included in a complete swap, but isn't listed, I'll check to see what I have.
Things that need attention:
-Oil pan drain plug is stripped. It stays tight, and doesn't leak, but it will keep spinning, and stays wet around that area, so it is seaping. You'll want to retap it or helicoil it. I can do this if you want, but might as well pull the pan to do it and replace the pan gasket, since it is seeping a bit.
-Transmission output seal is leaking.
Other:
The engine got new valve cover gaskets, spark plugs, intake boot, and a few other bits when I did the cams, which was about a year ago.
Over $2.5k and lots of labor invested. My car ran low 14's at 95-96mph and got 27-28mpg, and was a little on the heavy side for an e30.
The only reason I'm selling is because I did a complete restoration on the chassis and decided to throw an m60 in just to be different.
Don't let the mileage scare you. My buddy had a 400k mile m50 that ran great (until he money shifted it). It's all about how you treat and maintain them. I used the engine, but didn't abuse it. Waited until it was fully warmed up to go into higher RPM's, never let it overheat, etc... Also, the inside of the head looked VERY clean when I put the cams in, and there was no scoring on the journals.
Price: $1200 picked up in Ephrata, PA.
