Hey Greg, you provide a great service and I'm hoping that you can solve my problem. If you think you can, I'm happy to send you a cluster for refurbishment.
My issue: My 1991 318iS Motometer Odometer and trip meter are not working, even after swapping gears with a set from Garagistic.
Every morning when I start the car and drive at very low speed (lets say first gear), the trip meter will work for about 1/10th of a mile, then freeze again. I'm not sure what is causing this, but it's starting to annoy me a bit. Everything else in the cluster works, and is accurate. What could cause a bad odo/trip meter if not the gears themselves?world renown Harry Potter expert

I've been experiencing almost the same issue as phreshkid. When I take my cluster apart and put it back together and into the car the odo/trip will work the first time I drive the car. once I shut it off the odometer/trip don't work again until I repeat the process. Could this be at the fault of the si batteries? I also have a spare 1984 si board that I would be happy to send you, along with other miscellaneous cluster parts.84 325e, Saphirblau Metallic/Houndstooth Sport, OBD-2 M52B28/ zf320Comment

-Inspect gears to make sure all teeth are in good condition, make sure gears are not smashed or deformed.
-Check for proper fitment on metal cylinder shafts. Not too loose, not too tight, experience is valuable here.
-Clean full odometer assembly. This means taking everything apart and cleaning it thoroughly.
-Clean both cylinder shafts, hit it with a jewelers file to get all crud off.
-Clean plastic cover door.
-Install gear set and make sure they are placed correctly. If placed incorrrectly, the odometer may still work but will have intermittent problems or no operation.
-Do not install smallest gear too low on its shaft or it will bind up.
-Do not over tighten the protective cover or it will warp gear set causing it to seize
-Verify odometer motor is in good condition, clean and make sure electrical contacts are not broken.
-Refurbish speedometer circuit board. Electrical trace cracks and some components can fail when heated up over time. This is especially true for VDO brand speedometers.
These are some tips which should help you guys. Good luck.Owner - Bavarian Restoration

I see this all the time. Sorry to say but most likely cause is improper installation. Odometer repair is a very involved process, much more than most people think. Here is our technique:
-Inspect gears to make sure all teeth are in good condition, make sure gears are not smashed or deformed.
-Check for proper fitment on metal cylinder shafts. Not too loose, not too tight, experience is valuable here.

I've installed new gears in various clusters over the years with great success. This is the first time I've been stumped, and I admit to not going over the installation with a fine toothed comb prior to cluster re-installation.
I've heard stories of improperly printed gears at Garagistic, so I will check that out once more.
I'm throwing up prayers and hoping for a miracle.
Thanks Greg, your feedback is most appreciated.

I hate that you may be right, but I will rip apart my dash ONE MORE TIME and see if I can get this thing going.

In the end, we've used their gears for over 6 years now and hundreds of clusters and odometer repairs with great success. I must also admit we also use odometergears.com with great success also. Those are the only two manufacturers I trust and recommend. Good luck!Owner - Bavarian Restoration

Thank you very much for your help, Greg. I'm going to check it out this coming weekend. hopefully cleaning up the speedometer and gears will help me out here. If not you may be seeing my cluster at some point.
My first time doing the gears it didn't work at all, I thought I could have broken the stepper motor that drives the gears, is that possible? my replacement speedometer is off by a couple mph so it would be nice to put my original one back in.84 325e, Saphirblau Metallic/Houndstooth Sport, OBD-2 M52B28/ zf320Comment
