I'm putting this in while doing keyless and cruise retrofit. There is an "always hot" thick red wire under the cluster near the steering column that I plan to tap into for the reading. I'll verify the value with a multimeter but in checking it out of curiosity, it looked to be a good place to tie in with the blue wire (same resting voltage as measured at the battery).
I had asked about tinting etc. because I don't want to have this bright display on my console, and I realized that the fog switch blank is the same size. My car has no fogs of course, and I will be putting the volt meter in that spot on the light switch panel. I'll still put a hidden on/off switch in line so that I can turn it off at night when not needed.
Just an fyi for others.
