I have the same unit with Mercedes paperwork. It was dealer installed in my '86 190e 2.3-16. Obviously the technology is outdated but it's a really cool period correct option. -
I have not had the chance to set up my own but the ones I have seen show the K40 unit under the HVAC controls with the larger box zip-tied to the rad support.Comment

Some do, some don't. In my time collecting these, I have seen ones with the roundel, and two different K40 logos (one like this, in orange, and another in white). All identical units, just different logo designs.
Since these were dealer installed, I suspect there's all sorts of variants. This one from the E28 had the K40 logo; another I purchased from a forum member (that I am keeping) has the BMW logo.Comment

These still work. There are numerous bands which are used for speed enforcement purposes. This only does one of those bands; albeit a very common band.
Not all are BMW branded. The K40 model number is BW200.
For the 3er, the remote piece is attached under the HVAC panel.
A radar detector forum has a thread with video and grainy pictures of all paperwork.Comment

The third black box component has been debunked to the point that the scans of the original packaging from K40 listed two units, not three. It's entirely possible (and likely) that rear-facing detection could be added by various aftermarket providers in the 80s.Comment
