This is the original engine from my 1988 e30 M3 that I have had for over 10 years. The engine will need some work before it can be used, here's the story.
I had the engine rebuilt about 8 years ago. We used stock parts and sleeved the cylinders. About 4 years ago I spun a rod bearing and the engine came out to get repaired. On the shops advice I bought a brand new crank from BMW ($2200) and was told that the rods looked good and would not need to be replaced. The shop made a mistake putting the engine back together and forgot to put the flywheel guide pin on the new crank, because of this they had the timing off by one bolt. This caused the valves to bend once we fired it up.
I took the car back from the shop and took it to a friend's shop and with his mechanic's help fixed all the issues myself. I changed out the head with a Metric Mechanic ported and polished head (see the pics) that uses stock valves. I had the head decked and checked at a local machine shop (Scroggins) here in Houston before using it. I also replaced all the timing components including guides, chain, and an S52 chain tensioner and also added an oil baffle from VAC to the pan to remedy the oil starve issue.
I got the car running great and was having a lot of fun with it and then after about 4 months it developed a knock again. I drained the oil and there were small copper flakes in it. My guess is that the rods weren't good as the shop told me and it spun another rod bearing. I have not pulled the pan or checked beyond that point to see what the issue is. I had a full driveline from an e36 m3 and have decided to commit sacrilege and swap that into the car and let someone else have the s14.
At the bare minimum the engine will need new rod bearings, I would guess also new rods. The crank should be great and just need a polish since it's practically new. You can buy a high mileage stock motor and need to do a full rebuild or you can buy this motor and put in a new bottom end and save yourself the very expensive timing components as well as gain a really nice ported and polished head.
Engine comes complete with all accessories like the alternator, AC compressor, power steering pump, etc. Also has full wiring harness, upgraded plug wires, ECU (not pictured but included) and the AFM (also not pictured but included). Transmission is stock Getrag 265 and shifted smoothly, I ran Redline synthetic fluid in it.
This would make a nice replacement for your s14 or a good drop-in for a 2002 or other BMW project. Shipping should be around $400-$500 depending on where you are.
$7200 or best offer. It's also listed on eBay right now.
