Might be if you did it as a business...not sure.
Same thing as "dismantling" or parting cars is illegal in some states, but everyone on here does it.Comment

If this is true, I obviously will cease my attempt to sell it. I am unaware of any such law and wasn't trying to do anything illegal. I had purchased a car with a failed timing belt, but the cat looked fine. Therefore I was hoping I could help someone out by selling it.
Anyone have any links that are applicable to this situation? I spent a few minutes on a search, and the closest thing I found was a moderator on a MBenz forum stating that it is illegal.John

To clear the air, I did some more poking around. I never found any conclusive proof that it is in fact illegal, but I am removing it to not even tempt fate. I did end up finding multiple references to the fact that it is illegal, although none from sources that are totally legitimate (other forums and folklore....).

You can sell it as 'scrap metal'. You can clearly state the condition it was in when you removed it, but also clearly state that you are selling it as scrap metal due to the law. That's how I do it anyway...Comment

Sounds like a plan...thanks for the tip. I may try to find a PGM (platinum group metals) recycler and get the value for the metal in the core. Precious metals in a catalyst, in theory, do not degrade.
I realize this begs the obvious question....how / why do catalysts fail if the above is true? That I don't have the best answer to. :(John

I always sold them on ebay for ~$200 each. They sold within a few hours with Buy-It-Now. Package them up halfass since they are just being scrapped anyway, ship them out, and call it an evening!
As for your question.... http://auto.howstuffworks.com/question4822.htmComment

I believe he is saying that you could post it up on here as something like "used mid section including cat for "scrap metal" good condition when pulled from the car $150"Originally posted by NicademusMy car beats off to that car. :bow:Comment

Yeah, as long as you don't advertise it as an emissions regulatory device or claim it will get your car legal again, etc etc, then technically it is just scrap metal.
Anyone want a used exhaust mid-section for scrap?
