    Getrag 250 close ratio trans

    Getrag 250 non overdrive trans from a 1994 E34. Ratios are 4.23 - 2.52 - 1.66 - 1.22 - 1.00. This is perfect for the twin cam swap guys, but is also a good upgrade to the M20 powered cars. It's not going to be too hard to make this work behind an M20 and it's a cheap way to have a CR trans

    The donor car was very clean, but wrecked. Couldn't turn on the electronic cluster to read the odometer though.

    Comes with a decent Guibo that is the standard E30 drive shaft flange size. You don't need to find the scarce 1987 325e drive shaft with large Guibo that is required for the Z-F swap. Rear mounts are good too. Also the slave cylinder is included.

    I have to thank Jean for helping me pull it as my back was FUBAR that day.

      I want to use one of the later trans behind my M20 and I bought this one and I also bought a Z-F. I am going with the Z-F because it has the larger Guibo and I already have the correct drive shaft.

            It's from a 1994 E34 525i. It can be used in many different cars though.

              I was unaware of this option....just what is required to make it work with an M20B25? Different driveshaft needed? What about diff ratio? Shifter stuff?

              A very interesting find - good to know there's another option aside from a diff swap.

                the output shaft on the 250 has 12mm bolt holes and the e30 325i driveshaft has 10mm holes so they don't match up perfectly. i was running this combo on my twincam car and lunched the stock e30 325i guibo in about 300 miles. i switched to the e36 325i driveshaft and guibo with the e30 325i csb and everything has been fine since (knock on wood).

                  I just looked at the Guibo and Hugh Jass is correct, it's 12mm rather than 10mm. I missed that. It's the same size as the standard E30 Guibo so drill out the holes on the shaft to 12mm or use spacers on the 12MM side.

                  The mods are more or less the opposite of what people do to use the Getrag 260 behind the twincam engine. But, the trans will be tilted the other way. I am mocking up the Z-F behind an M20 short block right now on a work bench. Looks pretty simple and while I have the welder fired up I will modify a few extra transmission crossmembers.

                  I think for a daily driver the 3.46LSD will be perfect. I know many guys are running the 3.25LSD, but I think that's because it's been easier to find or maybe they just need to go "faster". I need to go "quicker" so I am leaving the 4.10LSD in my car and yes it will buzz on the freeway. But, it's not my daily driver, it's my play car.

                  I need to stick the mock up block and trans in the car to fab the shifter, but it should be pretty simple. I will do it before the end of the week. My engine hoist is loaned out right now. My engine hoist is always loaned out.....

                          Are you calling this a close ratio just because its a 1:1 fifth?

                          I've never heard of a Getrag 250 being referred to as close ratio box before.

                            Yup. Compare the ratios with the standard E30 overdrive trans and then with the dogleg Euro trans. Looks like a close ratio trans to me.
