    WTB: sound proofing

Im looking to make the new car super quiet and comfortable for long trips. I've heard the Dynamat Extreme is the best so that's what i would like to find, but im open to anything.

Second Skin Audio was built with one goal in mind: provide the best car sound deadening materials in the world, without exception, and without compromise.

Dynamat does very little to reduce noise, especially road noise.

Dynamat does an excellent job of keeping metal from ringing, but that is not the goal here.

If you are looking to reduce road noise (tires and wind) you need to add a sound barrier under your carpet. I prefer "the Insulator" http://users.cwnet.com/thall/insulato.htm

You can also make a huge difference by making sure all of the body panels are properly aligned...unless the car is a convertible...

Somehow i knew you would answer luke....

I'll look into other options then because when i was first turned onto the idea i heard dynamat would be the way to go. Its going onto my coupe, so i'll try to heed your advice.

i basically want to reduce wind, tire, differential, and engine noise so the GF can sleep and wont complain about taking the e30 on road trips.

I agree with him, if it's mostly noise, you'll want some kind of insulating barrier. I'd look at Second Skins Luxury liner too, and I think some of their closed-cell foam applications. Great quality stuff, they've been pretty good to me over the years. Obviously there are other products out there, but butyl or asphalt-based stick on mat deadeners are not what you're needing.

Kendogg, have you tried that aluminized matting? I promise you will never do closed cell again, this stuff is far far superior.

I haven't used what you linked, no. However, I've never tried to quiet an interior before either (of my own at least). I used some foam, along with SS, and some spray deadener - worthless stuff that was - when deadening the doors of an integra, which I sold as soon as the system was installed, after the 2nd blown motor :/

Back in the day I built a SBC powered Land Cruiser. It got so hot on the floor it would melt shoes. I carefully covered every square inch of the floor and firewall with that stuff, only the double sided type. I sealed every edge with the heavy duty aluminum duct tape, then glued every inch down...then I built a carpet kit that looked the part in a $25,000 project.

The difference was stunning in every department. It was warmer in winter, cooler in summer, quieter all around. Nearly a driveable vehicle, actually, where before it was unbearable!

I have done 3 or 4 cars with CC foam, it basically did nothing more than the factory padding, unless it was like a Honda or some crap that has no padding in the first place, but it was more comfy.

I have done 6 or 7 cars in the other stuff. Absolutely shocking, and a definite part of the next round of interior build for my car. One of my goals is a gloss firewall inside the engine bay, yet I want the car quieter than it is now...

Yeah, but it ain't light! Low frequency sounds need mass to absorb them.

None, sorry. I buy it at local Upholstery Supply houses. I am lucky enough to have 3 within striking distance.

well the point of having stripped the interior and redoing it was to get rid of all the moldy dank smell that old and poorly maintained cars come with. so being a cheap ass on this is probably not a good idea.

good call. i know i could just measure and multiply by 1.25-1.5, but how much would you think it would take to cover the interior? Im planning on doing the firewall, floor, back seat, door panels, and trunk. is that stuff you suggested what should be used for all of that?
