FWIW I have a pearl Beige dye kit I got from George at Leatherique and when I asked him about the prospects of lightening an indigo center cushion he said that the sanding/prep process removes most of the color layer anyway so going lighter should work fine.

I am yet to do it but the man knows way more than I do about the subject.
