Octane is basically the difficulty of the fuel to ignite. The higher octane, the more the fuel can be compressed before it will ignite, so the later you can set the ignition. The more compressed the mixture, the more energy is released within a certain period of time. If the wrong octane of fuel is compressed too much it will detonate and that will not be good, so you use higher octane so that it can be compressed even further and the ignition cycle won't cause detonation.
Simply-- the higher the octane, the more advanced the timing curve can be, therefore leading generally to higher performance.
