Wtb: 3.73 LSD - no noise please!

Looking for a great condition 3.73 LSD that makes no noise. The lower the mileage the better.

Also as an option, I am willing to trade mine plus cash for yours (or sell outright to anyone interested). It was recently rebuilt with fresh internals by Igor @ CATuned and upgraded to 30% lockout + oem bushing, but makes some whining noise... Would be perfect for track use, etc, but I tend to daily the car and don't like the noise. It has 1500 miles on it.

    Thanks!

Sounds like a terrible trade that no one will be interested in; sell it for a dead core

if you want a perfect diff you need to order a 0 mile new one.

I disagree and here is why:

First, my diff plus cash for a diff that someone may not be using or for someone wanting to upgrade is a perfectly reasonable trade, especially considering that not every person out there cares that a perfectly working diff makes some noise, ie, someone who tracks his or her e30. Again, my diff works perfectly besides the almost inaudible whining noise.

Second, I think there are many great condition rear diffs out there. I know many guys have swapped out their 3.73 LSD for a 4.10 or other. I am not looking for perfect, though I am not even sure how you would define perfect. I'm looking for a good working rear diff that does t howl like a wolf. Again, not an unreasonable request.

If I decide that $1,000 is in the budget for a brand new diff, I will definitely have you build me one. But in the meantime, it would be great to get a used diff in good condition that doesn't make noise, and I think it is doable.

        Best of luck.

In all honestly Going to the junkyard and randomly buying one has better luck than r3v

This is why your request is ridiculous; go to the junkyard and hire an illegal to remove it if you don't want to get dirty; it has better chance of being good than most "rebuilt" differential units.

You are the one who has a noisy "rebuilt" unit. Lol

The bmw dealership charges about $2700 for a brand new differential unit.

Have you asked Igor about why it's noisy? Have you confirmed it's even the diff at fault? Honestly finding a good (non noisy) oem diff without well over 100k on it will be very difficult

Woa man. I don't know why you are down my throat about my thread...? I have checked the local pick and pulls and none of them have what I need. As you can see, I am new to r3v, so I didn't realize this wasn't a good place to get parts... Seems like there are quite a few parts for sale on this board.

Who said anything about not wanting to get dirty? I am happy to roll up my sleeves and pull a diff, I just don't know of any available locally. Also, I am not looking for a rebuilt unit; I'm looking for an OEM unit. As you explained in your email, most "rebuilt" units are not up to par with OEM quality (as I am seeing with my noisy rebuilt unit).

I appreciate your feedback but just can't wrap my head around why you think my request is so ridiculous and why you are being so critical of my thread??

Yes I contacted Igor. He offered to take a look at it, but I assumed that shipping alone would be a good chunk of change that I could use towards a different unit. I have confirmed that the diff is whining a bit. I am ok with a diff that has over 100k on it... But I am starting to see that it is unlikely to happen, though I have heard the contrary.

Anyways, again, thanks for the feedback..........

Now, anyone have a diff to sell me?

Keep watching the classifieds. They pop up regularly. Have you thought about getting some grease and running a test pattern on the ring gear to see if the ring and pinion are set up properly? It should be pretty close if it was recently done. How about picking up a cheap open diff until you get it straightened out or borrowing one from someone local. It only takes an hour and a half to swap a diff. I would think a reputable vendor would help with the shipping if their work is at fault - and should get a fair chance to correct their work. Mistakes happen...parts fail...etc.
              Good luck

Doesn't sound like I could get the diff rebuilt for free or low cost at ca tuned since I'm not the original owner. I don't even want to try and fight that battle. In this day and age, it is very very very very very very rare that any vendor or shop actually stands behind their products/work. I got screwed out of $3,000 on a transmission that failed at mile 200 from a vendor in Texas (Jakes Transmission) and the dick blamed it on me. I have no faith in these online vendor / forum warrior types anymore.

Bummer! Is the whining just when you are going around turns? I have read that a little whining can be expected when lockup % is increased, especially until it is broken in. How many miles are on the diff?

Whining occurs at like 20-30 mph +, and isn't effected by turning. It's not unbearable by any means, just less than ideal for long drives on the highway without radio. However, I usually drive with windows down, which pretty much drones everything else out. If I can't find a good used diff, I'll just bide my time and eventually have wanganstyle build me one!

Has anyone recommended Jim Blanton at Performance Gearing? You will not have to worry about integrity issues with him! The E30 3.23LS unit that Jim built served me impeccably for ten years before I pulled it to change to a 3.64. My buddy put the same 3.23LS unit in his E28 M30 turbo car and is still using it. I picked up the differential at his old shop in Kansas City, MO and was highly impressed with his organization and craftsmanship!

Thank you for the recommendation. I actually think he was recommended to me by Cory. It looks like I'm going to just have to shell out the cash for a good/reliably built unit, which is fine. I just wanted to see what options I had...
