Here's a photo of the small case (left) vs medium case (right). Small case has 6 bolts on the cover. Medium case has 8 bolts on the cover.

Mike, I know you want small case, if you decide you are okay with a medium case I have one out of my M3 with 156k miles for $350 firm. Remember the axles are all the same in the later cars and the diff will come with cover and output flanges and will bolt right in. But it appears you are going for originality and LIGHT weight. If you decide you can forgo that, this one is here. And I'm also in Virginia.
