I just ended up buying the cam locking blocks, TDC pin.
I didnt think the cage was needed. if you go slow enough it should be ok.
Whats the Vanos wrench?? I never seen that.

Its for engines that use a wave plate on the intake cam, early vanos systems (obd1) dont have a wave plate spring, you should be able to rotate the chain assembly by hand. Otherwise the vanos wrench turns the intake sprocket.

The "pelican method" works but putting them back in can be tough.

Do you have the s52 cam trays? I dont believe the cams will fit in obd1 trays.

Yeah thats where I was having trouble.
Every time I put the vanos on my intake cam wants to turn.
that is what is causing my timing issues. I hope to have it all taken care of this weekend.

Are you setting the intake cam to its furthest clockwise position? Once you've done that insert the vanos unit and rotate the cam counterclockwise making sure the first tooth of the vanos gear meshes with the first tooth in the intake cam sprocket. Once you can verify this you will need to turn the intake cam to install the vanos completely. Sometimes I do this more than once just to be sure.

So the cam should move, just rotate the engine a few times now that you have the locks then you can verify correct timing.

If the chain tensioner tool isnt used it could cause timing issues as well.

Dr. Vanos has a nice writeup on vanos install:

Professional Vanos repair and rebuild service for your 1994 - 2006 BMW

Here is a quote on aligning the vanos back in:

"Before installing the vanos, rotate the exhaust gear fully clockwise with the tool until it stops. Position the new vanos on the mounting studs and use your fingers to rotate the splined cup until it engages with the intake cam. You should only see about 1-2mm of the splines on the cup sticking out of the intake gear. (See photo)

Now, while gently pushing against the vanos, slowly rotate the exhaust gear counter
-clockwise until the intake gear catches the first available tooth on the cup. You shouldn’t have to rotate the exhaust gear very far for the intake gear to catch. Once it catches, continue rotating the tool until the vanos is fully seated against the head.
Be sure not to continue rotating the tool once the vanos is fully seated, as it will pull the
splined cup back out of the housing. If this happens, gently rotate the tool back
(clockwise) until the cup moves fully back into the housing."

You can also square your cams by loosening the exhaust cam torx bolts, squaring the blocks, and then tightening them back up. I had issues with my timing going a couple degrees off because my crank pulley bolts were not torqued.

If you haven't already, post in the regional subforums asking for some help. That way, the people who are local to you are more likely to see it.

I bought all of the correct tools. With reading through all of the write ups I think I got a good enough idea of everything thats going on and what exactly to do.
If I have any trouble Im sure I will keep trying it again. I will get it, When I do it wont be that big of a deal any more. :D
