forgot to mention.. the "battery" in an insight is comprised of 180 D-cell batteries which are welded together into 20 separate sticks. The battery pack in my particular insight lasted 12 years until it finally threw an error.

It also doesn't get plugged in to charge. It charges while you drive.

Dunno if it gets much more environmentally friendly than that at this point. I dislike the Prius and most other gas/electric hybrids because of the massive amount of batteries they have combined with their short lifespan.

      VW TDI FTW

Make black smoke, still get a Billion MPGs. Throw some bigger injectors and tuned software ion there, and make more power and more smoke.

        How about... TDI + Insight : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gQRb...feature=relmfu

        80-90MPG.

Cost of swap + diesel (instead of 87) doesn't offset savings even for me at 30,000 miles a year.

As a matter of fact.. if you are like most people and only drive about 12k a year tops, you aren't saving anything by buying a hybrid or trying stupid hypermiling tricks. I visit ecomodder forums every once in a while and catch a glimpse of a thread about some genius hypermiling their 90's ford taurus or some other old 20-30mpg car.

Then they get all happy when they show their results of an increase from 22mpg to 26mpg. Some people, man...

I have to ask myself over and over if these people realize they are only saving about $300 a year. Some of them get so excited over coroplast aero panel mods and other super high tech backyard engineering though.

        It's just fun to watch.

I'm not a big fan of the prius, but my daily is a first gen honda insight. I was dailying my vert for as long as I could, but it didn't make sense.. at all.

I get 60-70mpg ALL the time in that car and I drive 2000 miles a month or more for work. I also get reimbursed for my mileage on top of my salary at the federal rate - $0.555

I paid $7k for the car last May with tax title and tag.

So do I want to use 370 gallons of gas a year in my insight (65mpg) and keep all of that money?
Or should I use 1090 gallons of gas a year in my vert (22mpg) and worry about all of the repairs?

          Here's the math:
I usually get a mileage check for about $1200 or more every month.
          Insight insurance: $60/month
          Oil change every 2 months (5k) with 3.5 qts. 0w20 and purolator: $40 - $20/month
Drop in K&N filter never gets replaced.. no other maintenance on 3cyl engine car. It just runs and runs.

Not a tough choice for me. It just happened to work out for my situation. Most people don't happen to drive as much as I do.

I'm just saying for the sake of hating on Prius'.. sometimes there is a good reason someone purchased that car. I look at cars like I look at tools, there's always a perfect car to get the job done.

I attached an image of my cluster on an average day. The econometer is dead accurate.

your check engine light is on.
