M52 swap with Getrag 260 starter doesn't disengage from flywheel after starting.

Used the stock M20 flywheel but spaced it out using the round spacer from an auto transmission before mounting the flywheel. My e30 was originally auto before I swapped it to manual years ago.... so I still had that spacer ring for the auto tranny.

I saw a you tube video where someone used that spacer from a manual transmission to put enough distance between the flywheel and the oil pan so that it did not hit... and my local machine shop declined to take off material from the back of the flywheel... so I used the old auto tranny spacer ring (where the flywheel bolts go though) to space out the flywheel... I did notice the automatic tranny ring was thicker than the manual tranny ring. It was so thick that it was flush with the dowel pin on the crank shaft... and the dowel pin no longer extended into the flywheel so it pretty much was not aligning the flywheel.

I am guessing that the misalignment may be causing the starter to hang (stock M20 starter plus a new one I bought both do the same). The car starts fine but then it sounds like the starter is continuing to spin with the engine so I shut it down right away.

Not sure whether anyone else has had this happen and can share... or... if there is a better option for a getrag 260 flywheel / starter / clutch combo.... please let me know...I did try spacing the starter back 3 mm with washers... and thought I had it sorted because she started a number of times just fine... BUT... this morning the starter wouldn't disengage again...

I also saw a post where someone said they ground down the parts on the M52 that hit the M20 flywheel for clearance... is that feasible... they said that only took a few minutes?
