I recently purchased a m52 motor with wiring harness. According to the po, the ecu has an "open source tune from somewhere near Atlanta". Can anyone decipher this and point me in a direction to download the software to view it?

It's a fair bit of reading but all the info is there. Should be links to the romraider forum and the discord server if you have questions about anything.
Basically an INPA K+DCAN cable and either wire in an OBD2 port or buy a BMW 20 pin ADS to OBD2 adapter.
Software:
ECU Read/Write: MS41 quickflash
Open .bin files: Romraider + definitions + whatever 32bit java version (alternatively https://sites.google.com/site/openms41/tuning MS41 Portal will install all the Romraider/definitions/Java and configure it. Also will install drivers for the INPA Cable.)
May need to jump two pins on the ADS port to "enable write access" as the wiki says.
Use a battery charger/tender because the ECU doesn't like to read/write below ~12.1V
