Easy way?
Open the expansion tank. Squeeze upper radiator hose and hold it. Put your finger over the little hole in the expansion tank neck. Keep your finger over the hole and release the upper radiator hose. The coolant level in the tank should move down and you should have seen water/bubbles come out of the hole when you squeezed the radiator tank. Repeat this process until the coolant level no longer falls when you release the radiator hose.
That's the way that I have always done it.

I've never tried it this way. Do you keep your finger over the hole as you squeeze and release the radiator hose?

I used a 1/8" bit, and it made bleeding pretty easy. I just filled up the system really slowly, squeezed the hoses, and only had to top the coolant off a small amount.

You put your finger over the hole right before you release the hose, and put it on right after it has been released.

I'm confused, then when do you take it off?

I squeezed the hose, put my finger over the hole, then released the hose. After it was done "unsqueezing" I released my finger and repeated.

That seemed to get most of the air out but then I started my car for a bit, turned it off and noticed more air bubbles in the hose (squeezed it and heard sloshing)

Stock temp... or lower. I don't remember. I've replaced it a few times.

That's exactly how I do it. (the way you did it)
You will be able to hear some water being sloshed around when you squeeze the hose. Honestly, since you have most, if not all, of the air bled, I would say to do some driving around and let the system finish bleeding itself off. Normally, with an E36, you do it the way that I said to and then bring the motor up to about 3000 and crack the expansion tank bleed screw open. The bleed screw is just a high point in the system, it would be the same if you took the expansion cap off and opened the throttle until nothing but coolant is coming out of the hole.
