    24V swap status/ questions

    E30

Hi all, I’m looking for some guidance on an 24v swap I’m planning on completing soon. Giving some back story, I’ve had this automatic, early model 325 for a couple years now, bought it in 2020 for $500 with a warped head. It’s been an ongoing project while I’ve been in college but I’m now getting time (and money) to work on the car. Currently I have an m52b25TU from an e46 323i with a manual trans (I think it’s a zf) that I’m wanting to put into the car and I think I’ve got everything I need, I’m just looking to see if anyone’s got any thing I should pick up before hand to make sure I’ve got all my bases covered.

Here’s my current list of parts:
    • M42 radiator
    • Front sump oil pan (and associated bits
    • E30 manual pedals
    • M52b25tu and manual trans (still have E46 chassis for any extra parts)
    • E34 throttle cable
    • Engine mounts and arms

Some questions I’ve been trying to find answers for but haven’t yet found
    • Can I use the clutch master/ slave cylinder from the e46 with the e30’s pedal set?
    • Will the manual trans match with the auto drive shaft? Or would an early e30 manual drive shaft work?
    • Will an e30 manual trans brace work with the e46’s trans?
    • Could I use the e46’s drive shaft with the stock e30’s diff?
    • Where are you guys getting your ecu tuned to get rid of ews?

    • Can I use the clutch master/ slave cylinder from the e46 with the e30’s pedal set? The slave cylinder should be the one that the trans came with. The master should remain the E30's.
    • Will the manual trans match with the auto drive shaft? Or would an early e30 manual drive shaft work? The fitment issue has more to do with the difference in guibo between the trans and shaft. I got lost in which driveshaft exactly is needed, so I ended up using an adapter. I have a ZF with an E30 manual shaft with an adapter like this. I'm actually not sure what the difference in length is between auto and manual, though. But I know there's info on it you can search for.
    • Will an e30 manual trans brace work with the e46’s trans? Use the E30's support bracket, but you need different transmission bushings. Look up which OEM rubber ones you're supposed to use, otherwise pick up a swap-kit that uses poly.
    • Could I use the e46’s drive shaft with the stock e30’s diff? Again I'm unfamiliar with driveshafts, but you do use the stock E30 diff.
    • Where are you guys getting your ecu tuned to get rid of ews? I sent my ECU to SSSquid Tuning, but there's also Redline, and probably a few more options out there. There's one or two guys on here that advertise their service for ecu management and wiring, take a look around.

You're gonna need quite a few more things, I'm willing to bet. Stuff for brakes, shift linkage, fuel, and exhaust to name a few. You should replace the detents in the trans. Definitely replace the starter. Since you have an early model, you'll need to get a late model coolant reservoir and mount it correctly. Are you shaving a coolant temp sensor down to fit the head? etc etc.
