M50tu G260 Starter Won't Engauge with Flywheel After Swap

    Hey everyone,
I just finished putting together my M50tu swap into my '88 325. Shortly before the M20 blew I manual swapped it using a "deep bell housing' G260 from an eta, and a late "is" flywheel I got for free from a buddy. Since its the deeper bell housing trans for an eta I used the euro 320i TOB to make up the 8mm difference. The starter I used was the same one that was in the car when it was an auto and I had no issues starting it up and driving it before I took the M20 out for the swap.

Fast forward to today I just finished putting most things in for the M50tu swap. I reused the G260 and the "is" flywheel and clutch since they were almost brand new. Used the same starter that worked fine when it was auto. I jumped the starter relay under the dash and went to hit the key and the starter spins but does not engage. At first I thought maybe the Bendix had gone bad and it was not kicking out but I took the starter out and bench tested it and it works fine. Looking in the hole in the trans where the starter goes you can see the starter looks like its rubbing against the flywheel but the teeth on the starter are too deep and cannot go into the teeth of the flywheel. I did double check my wiring and the starter signal and the unloader relay are all hooked up correctly.

My question is why did this setup work fine before the swap but now I can't get it to work at all? Do I need to use an M50 starter bolted to the G260? I have multiple people who have done this swap with this combo say it should work fine and I can't figure out what would have changed with the starter alignment.

For context this is the starter I am using. I'm 99% sure it's the one that was in my car when I got it as an auto.

Solved. I had mixed up the starters and was actually using an M50 starter. Got an M20 starter and it cranked no problems
